OpenOffice needs a mascot or something that people can identify with (like the Fox). Right now it's just another grey program with no real marketing spark.
OpenOffice is not terribly slow. I use it all the time. A big market for OpenOffice is students and universities. There is no need for people to buy the "student edition" of MS Office when they can download OpenOffice for free.
