1. Kodak *used* to do "real work, good work". 2. Yes Kodak has multiple digital imagin patents, but trying to claim they invented the preview? They might as well claim to have invented the human eye. 3. I agree Kodak is not evil, but licensing isn't the only response to a claim of patent infringement. Perhaps Apple should pull a Doctorow and buy Kodak. At least then they could re-purpose the infrastructure and talent for more creative purposes....
The important part to open source is the record format. After that, I can live with open or closed source software to access it. An open file format is imperative though, for any useful portability of records for patients.
Linux as it stands today is mainly a server oriented OS, despite KDE and Gnome attempts to turn it into a cutesy WinClone.
Want to see Linux games? Want to see them succeed? Create a working group to create a Linux distro that game developers can target. One that is streamlined and tuned specifically for kickass graphics, sound and efficiency. Think NetMax for gamers.
Hmm... did I just give away a billion dollar idea? Oh well....
How amusing. Katz actually can't see that he's the pot calling the kettle black.
Both the original Luddites and the current crop are driven by the same motiviation; fear and lack of understanding about technology (with a healthy dose of 'Let's preserve the status quo, shall we?').The only difference is that Katz allows the distance of time and the skewed perspective of history to color his own comments.
What matters isn't the tactics the Neo-Luddites employ, nor Katz's persistent whining about the unfairness of it all. It's the end result.
The original Luddites were wrong, despite Katz's romanticizing about their motivations. For example, would you trade your life expectancy (a direct result of advances in both industrial and medical technology) for that of one of the Luddite weavers? I think not, if you have brain one.
Struggle is inevitable, and I support anyone's right to use any reasonable means to express his or her point of view. I think the Neo-Luddite point of view is every bit as cockeyed as the originals, and that it needs to be countered by reason. Complaining, however, about the fact that they use effective methods is just whining.
My personal setup is DSS using the Sony receiver, and I bought a second Panasonic receiver for the kids. The Sony is a great, fast box, the Panasonic is a dog, but it's cheap and robust.
We looked at DISH network, but like the selection of DSS/USB better. However if you're not into lots of PPV movies and sports events, as well as top grade harcore pr0n, maybe DISH would suit.
We end up paying about $50/mo for service, with the HBO package and our monthly spate of PPV movie selections.
A couple of points;

2. Yes Kodak has multiple digital imagin patents, but trying to claim they invented the preview? They might as well claim to have invented the human eye.

I fully expect a royalty check.
