  1. This story is 800% bullshit on Firefox To Replace Menus With Office Ribbon · · Score: 3, Informative

The quote verbatim from Mozilla's wiki (found here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Sprints/Windows_Theme_Revamp/Direction_and_Feedback)

"Starting with Vista, and continuing with Windows 7, the menubar is going away. To be replaced with things like the Windows Explorer contextual strip, or the Office Ribbon(now in Paint and Wordpad too). Many apps still retain the menubar as an option to be pinned or to be shown briefly by holding the Alt key...Firefox isn't the type of application that necessarily has contextual actions in the same way Windows Explorer does. So how to handle the functionality of the menubar if it is hidden?"

They are just using the ribbon as an example of an interface that has eliminated the menu bar. If you read further they have mockups of the 3.7 and 4.0 interface, it looks absolutely nothing like the ribbon.

Not at all. Look, I'm not one to take a random quote from a Microsoft exec at face value; in fact, I personally believe that nearly any mainstream Linux distro is going to be more secure (in practice) than any Vista system. But seriously, your response to this claim is, "but Vista isn't as secure as the NSA's classified operating systems." Is that a joke? You're clutching at straws for the sake of disproving a marketing quote, it's embarassing.

First off, I submitted this, my bad on forgetting to put in a name. The reason I can't use 7 is because the 1000HD graphics chipset doesn't support Aero, and using Vista/7 without Aero basically renders the OS useless (especially in the case of 7, where the vast majority of the new GUI features require Aero). I was trying to be concise in the submission so I didn't want to get off in a tangent about how pissed I am that Intel refuses to write WDDM drivers for the GMA 900.

  17. Why am I not surprised? on MS Confirms Six Different Versions of Windows 7 · · Score: 2, Informative

Well, I guess it makes sense you guys would ignore some more facts in your endless rant against Windows. It's funny that the post says "the reality is more complex," when in fact the reality is LESS complex. See, there are six versions (Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, Ultimate). Starter is NOT meant for netbooks. Starter is exactly the same as Vista Starter: meant for super super poor countries. Home Basic is an extension of that, but it is meant as a low-cost version in countries with lots of piracy.

Let's go to the top of the list. Enterprise is just for businesses purchasing bulk licenses. Ultimate is the same as Vista Ultimate, except you're only ever going to be dealing with Ultimate if you are a techie and know where to find it - it won't be sold through normal distribution channels.

The only two left are Home Premium and Professional. These are the only two actual consumers will deal with. They are exactly the same as XP Home and XP Pro; in fact, the only reason it's called Home Premium is because test users thought Home was a downgrade from Home Premium, so the kept the name. So there you have it: there are TWO versions of 7, and four versions for niche markets that will never be sold in stores. It's a lot like XP, where Home and Pro were considered the only two editions, but there were lots of others (Starter, MCE, Tablet PC, Embedded). But in the case, people were smart enough to understand that consumers only had to choose between two.

It's interesting that Gizmodo and Endgadget (and any places that quoted their stories) made all this very clear, but Slashdot had to go find the one site that had their facts wrong.

  18. Of course they are on Is Microsoft Improving Its Image? · · Score: 1

Microsoft is improving their image greatly with OEMs and consumers. They just aren't improving their image with Slashdot readers, because until they they announce that Windows 8 will be base on Linux, they will still be hated. Remember when Microsoft was constantly releasing new studies showing that Windows was "better" than Linux? Did you notice that they (more or less) quit doing that? It's because they realized that Linux users aren't now and will never be a part of their consumer base. So, yes, Microsoft's image is better, but you will just never notice it because Microsoft won't ever be, in a million years, the company you want it to be.
