I had never heard of Cario when I got Win95 for the first time. OS/2 was just some mystical other OS that I heard was better than Win95, while AmigaOS and MacOS was those slow clunky UI that was on 'the way out'. As I 'Joe User' back then I didn't care in the least that there were better alternate operating systems out there, and I doubt 'Joe User' cares much more about operating systems these days. Point is, I think you are exaggerating the effect of Microsoft's FUDing. MS won by default, they just had to show up.
If everything in movies were to happen as in real life, things would get boring quick. So fighting scenes, driving, hacking, kids, etc, all have creative/dramatic licenses applied to them.
The question thus become, are you able to suspend your disbelief? I personally have trouble with several movies and series. "Dumb geniuses" is my pet peeve, what is yours?
The BIOS limitations have largely been worked around, and the few features that we users demand of a BIOS have already been implemented. True, a better BIOS would make life easier for OS software vendors, but that is not a feature we end users care about in the least. Think about it, what use does the general population have of the BIOS? If you want to repair a system your better of with a CD distribution, today's OS install software can format hard drives as needed, etc, etc...
A final paint: People rarely look at the BIOS when purchasing a system, and those that do are usually embedded or cluster shoppers. IOW, a vendor that stamps 'Advanced BIOS' on the feature checklist will not see much increase in sales - and that at the cost of implementing a non-trivial feature.
I'll have to say 2006 (Dreamfall was simply that good), before that 1994 with Doom II, Civ II, X-Com, *sim games, Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, etc...

I can't run SQL Server on Vista! Christmas is ruined! Thanks for nothing Microsoft >:(
Seems most tech companies have a large chuck of that map, except the most greedy one of all :P

Hate to say this, but torrent downloads are not anonymous. They can track your IP address, and can find out who you are from there.
To be perfectly honest, no. 128 KB MP3 is good enough (although I do hear a difference).
