  1. Massive adhoc network on WiFi in Your Rental Car · · Score: 1

Semi off topic but I have been thinking about this lately. Why aren't all cars equipped with wifi? Traffic on highways is normally dense enough to give you a adhoc connection to any other car in the state. I dunno what you would do with that connection but it would be really cool. Some simple ideas it could provide ways to inform other drivers in your local network of accidents and delays. I am sure other people could come up with more interesting uses of such a network.

This gen I have basically turned into a nintendo fanboy. Pre launch and post launch I am always trying to hype the console. When I was telling people about the information coming out of the media about the VC all my classic gamer friends who had gotten out of gaming were very excited about the wii. But when I tell people now that they wont see any classic nintendo games till some unannounced time in 2007 it just doesnt drum up much interest. So while I understand the logic of spacing out the A games and I think that will boost VC sales numbers it will hurt console sales numbers.

Let me just say that I am so tired of the the rampant bias against wikipedia in education. I have had teachers go on 10 minute rants on how horrible of a site it is. I also am frustrated with the fact that during these rants generally there are no facts, studies or examples given to why they believe wp is untrustworthy only that anyone can change it so that means it is bad. Are there bad articles in wikipedia? Yes I dont think anyone would disagree with that. Are the bad articles the ones you will be looking at? I think thats the more important question. The more popular a topic is the edits it receives and the more trustworthy the information is. That is ofcourse ignoring the fact that now many big wikipedia articles cite sources. Another baseless concern is that at the time you are looking at the article some random false fact will have been inserted. Wp has this little feature called "history" I always check the last couple changes to a article before citing it in a paper. If something seems fishy I will cite a earlier version of the same article.

Anyways I guess in summary people are way too afraid of the wiki model.

  14. Re:Oh god did the mario in me just die? on Wii Opera Browser is Free Until Next Year · · Score: 1

You missed the point of my post. Considering how barely readable my post was I am suprised you got that much out of it. Its not about opera costing money. As far as I am concerned Opera could cost 200$ to download. Imagine if opera cost 20$ to download for PC, this is a non issue. One day ICANN says that it is now illegal to surf the web with any other browser but opera. Where before Opera had to keep their price down to stay competitive with free browsers now they can charge whatever they want. If you want to surf the web you have to pay opera.

This is what happens with a central download service. If nintendo gets part of the money going through their service then it is in their best interest to reduce or remove all competition to the various services they offer. Competition drives down prices and thus reduces that amount Nintendo has coming in. You can see this happening with Verizon's software portal. Prices are insane and software is poor quality. But as a cell phone user you do not have a choice because you are locked into the software Verizon deems fit to run on your phone. Ideally Nintendo should make every effort to accept all software developers hand them. Run it through a few predefined tests for quality and stability and put it up. Their bottom line (on the short term) should not prohibit them from offering their customers more choices. Unfortunatly I am sure someone will tell me I am unrealistic to want a coporation to think about its customers instead of its stock holders but I can dream.

Okay so I have been super excited about the Wii. You could call me a Nintendo fanboy. But reading that summary has inspired feelings of dread. Great opera will be free as it should be, but then they are going to charge people to download it via their online shop service thing? Oh no please no pllleeeassseeee no. I have had enough of verizon locking me into their central download service. If you want to know what happens when a company can create artificial scaricity in a market go get a verizon phone and look at the stuff you can get online. Lets see... want to read email on your cell phone? Thats going to charge you 14$/month. Now you think wow thats a lot of money for something so simple... I am sure some other company is selling that for cheaper. But you are wrong! Verizon picks the apps so verizon can control the market by limiting your selection to just one companies shitty over priced email program. There is no such thing as competition here. So reading that Nintendo is going to charge me to download a web browser is not a comforting feeling. What other trivial features that should have come bundled are you going to milk me for? I can't believe I just compared Nintendo to Verizon.

Oh I get the parents logic but I don't agree with it. Lets say there are four companies producing flash chips. Your company is one of them. For sake of my arguement lets just say the market is split between all four companies. Your company then develops a alternative to flash that is better on all benchmarks. You have patented everything so you are the only company able to produce this new technology. Due to the fact that it is so much better than classic flash usage sky rockets until it kills off the older technology. Instead of the market being split between four players now the market is stuck on one.

Now you are saying that the fact that your company has a stranglehold on the market is not adequate compensation for research. *shrug* I disagree which was the point of my post.

  20. Re:New tech? We still get stuck on New "PRAM" 30 Times Faster Than Flash · · Score: 1

What I was more thinking about is how the record company passes high costs of production to the consumer but keeps the profits from low cost of production. For instance when the cd technology came about they said that prices would be high for awhile because of how much it costed to produce cds at the time. So there is a example of the consumer paying more for cost of production. Yet when itunes and friends came about and the cost of production went to almost nil (bandwidth) did we see a decrease in the price of a album? Nope. You can get a CD at the store for 12$ and yet a album on itunes comes out to about that also. Where is the money going from the reduced cost of pressing the music? Into the RIAA's pockets.

You can also seen this done with hybrid engines costing more yet not costing more to make. Though I dont know enough about that to make a solid arguement. Feel free to shred what I just said.

But I thought my original post was more offtopic than troll. but okay.

Hmmm maybe I was off by saying annoying. I meant near impossible. You would need to not only get every middle node in the chain but every node would have to have logging on. If even a single node had logging disabled then you can't trace it back. On top of that as I said many of the nodes exist outside the country of investigation which means convincing other governments that you have enough evidence to seize their citizens equipment. What are the chances of all this happening? I would guess they would have better luck consulting a psychic medium on the location of the downloader.

So I dont really see the fingerprint example as the same. There are too many barriers taking that path.

  24. Re:Is the polica incompetent or harassing? on German TOR Servers Seized · · Score: 1

I am not quite sure what they are expecting to find. Even if the tor server did keep logs it would still be annoying trying to track down who these requests are coming from. If the servers they got are middle nodes then all they get in logs would be: this other middle node wants me to pass this encrypted data to another middle node. Only the exit node gets to see the request and the data that gets passed back. So if they are trying to get back to the source that way I would imagine they would need to seize every node along the way hoping each one kept logs. Also I would imagine many of the tor middle nodes are not located in Germany. The other possibility would be they are grabbing exit nodes. If thats the case AND these exit nodes keep logs then I don't think that reveals the source. It could lead back to the source if say a middle node wanted to login to a kiddy porn site with a username and the police know that username is associated with a certain person. So I guess I am saying on a tor network logging SHOULD be disabled. If some tor servers happen to have logging on it is not the end of the world as long as its not a exit node and if it is a exit node then it still doesn't reveal who you are just makes it alot easier. Disclaimer: I could be talking out of my ass, this is just based on my understanding of how the tor network works. Also I do not support kiddy porn this is just me thinking about privacy in general on a tor network.
