  1. ...Huh? on Organism Survives 100 Million Years Without Sex · · Score: 4, Interesting

Who ever said sex was necessary for diversity? It just speeds it up - what's the big deal about this discovery? There are a crazy number of organisms that don't have sex and have changed a hell of a lot over time.

  2. Re:"Great Unifier." Feh. on Games As the Great Unifier · · Score: 1

I agree completely - what the article doesn't take into account at all is that there's IN GAME racism just as bad if not worse than real world racism. Horde vs Alliance, elves who hate trolls, orcs who hate humans, everyone who hates gnomes; real-world racism is replaced by racism in-game that players can actually *act on* unlike the real world. It does unify a race, there's a little thrill when you see someone playing the same species as you, but even within a faction there is a huge amount of virtual racism flying around. And that's just WoW, where there are different "nationalities." In a lot of games, it's much much worse.

  3. Re:Summary on Prey Review · · Score: 1

That's the feeling I get from the article - the writer ends with how good it is but the majority of the article seems to be complaints... At any rate, if you're curious, try the demo. Easy enough to get at www.gamershell.com, or any other big game site. From what I saw, it was a lot of fun with some cool ideas, but past the beginning didn't really have much to keep you going, the demo was enough.

  4. Re:Why the RTS and not the MMO? on Warhammer Mark Of Chaos - How Is The RTS? · · Score: 2, Insightful

No, the problem with the MMO is that Warhammer has never been about one guy running around on his own, it was always about big epic battles between armies LED by individuals. Can you imagine World of Warcraft where *every single player* has some 30 troops to command? An RTS is a lot more like GW's style, especially with the competitive multiplayer that can imitate the tabletop version as closely as any game type can.

  5. Re:Skaven over Orcs? on Warhammer Mark Of Chaos - How Is The RTS? · · Score: 1

The skaven are perhaps a little more unique - GW may have really started orks as an army way back when (and they did) but since everyone and their mother has orcs in their fantasy RTS. They still have the orcs as an army (seems to me from the article they're all pretty much even, the writer was just *really* bad) but the way to pick up new players, not just hardcore fans, is to add some new flavor.
Besides, I'm willing to bet for whatever reason the story of the game revolves more around skaven than orks. Who, despite the fun of Dawn of War definitely aren't that big on interesting story.

  6. Re:Pretty neat... on Ants Use Pedometers to Find Home · · Score: 1

I can see that little fellow going "WHEEEEEE!!" all the way there, seems to be much better off than the ones with shortened legs - though guessing by the premise without reading the article, I'd bet that that ant had just as hard a time finding home sweet home as the leg-shortened ants.

  7. Re:Ouch? on Ants Use Pedometers to Find Home · · Score: 1

Dunno - I'd guess though that the ant lost count of its steps, or counted properly and didn't end up in the right place because it wasn't the same number of steps anymore. At that point, the ant probably starting looking for the nest the old-fashioned way, rather than just giving up on the spot. As for pain, anyone who has ever gotten in a fight with an ant can tell you that pain doesn't bother them overmuch as far as fighting goes, they keep biting or running away just as hard until they literally can't.

  8. Re:Great sense of direction on Ants Use Pedometers to Find Home · · Score: 1

It probably would lose the original trail, I'd be willing to bet any other kind of ant could figure it out again if you put them down close to where you picked them up - but these guys? Who knows, there aren't really landmarks in deserts, especially not ones that stay for a long time.
