  1. Re:But on the flip side.... on Australian Teachers Try To Shut Down Website · · Score: 1

    Just for information.

    I live in Australia.

There are truths on both sides.

The experiences I get from students about what goes on in Sydney classrooms is absolutely shocking. It is not uncommon at all for teachers to tell the class "read this" and "test tomorrow on it all", and for the rest of the class time they sit at the desk and pick their fingers or whatever. A close friend (who is a VERY good student) failed physics in HS because of the teacher. BTW, my friend did very well with the same subject later in uni.

The elementary school just down the block houses half the classes is cheap mobile fibro-constructed shanties. The local news also reports a story about "35 degree classrooms" because these Australian mobile classrooms lack air conditioning - a must down under! ... a far cry from the beautiful brick country school I remember as a kid in another developed country.

My opinion: Australian schools (like most public infrastructure down under) are poorly planned, poorly funded and poorly cared about. It seems that money is often used very inefficiently here for stupid things like artificially driving real estate prices through the sky... a few benefit at the cost of the many. The schools are just another victim of the system.

  2. Never heard of it. on Serenity Trounces Star Wars · · Score: 1, Troll

    What is Serenity?

Sorry. I don't mean to sound ignorant or anything. My wife says I already watch more than my fair share of Sci-Fi.

None of my friends ever spoke of it either.

Was this some special interest poll?

I would like to know if it was really good. Maybe I'll rent it.

  3. But what about the hard part? on SoftMaker Rolls Out Office Suite for BSD, Linux, and Others · · Score: 1

But aren't there already several office solutions to choose from? Seems almost that every major window manager provides one or part of one.

As for .doc format compatibility, even basic tools like antiword can get you at least the text, so what remains is graphics, formatting, redlining and any metadata (versioning, etc).

What I would like to see is a taker on the old Visio format reverse-engineering bounty that was offered a while back :) Till then, its just more or less more of the same, according to taste.

  4. LiveCD FreeDOS distro in alpha stages on FreeDOS Not Dead; 1.0 Release Imminent · · Score: 2, Informative

From the new UDOS site on Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/udos):

uDOS is a free operating system built on the FreeDOS kernel with DJGPP. uDOS provides an integrated suite of features inluding Perl, Python, etc., as well as a Watt-32 based networking environment and ELF library support. Can be run live from CD image.

Discussion for UDOS currently takes place on irc://irc.freenode.net#djgpp

UDOS does a great deal to demonstrate what DOS tools are still out there, as well as the bugs they have! Many problems reported with the CD bootup involving LFN support, EMM386, etc. Not sure *nostalgia* is the right word for this kind of thing, but hey whatever... :)

Ah, and the ELF support isn't in just *yet*, pending release of DJGPP 2.04 so that the ELF patches can be made part of the core compiler as 2.05 (the last thing people need are *two* DJGPP distros). Now DJGPP just needs a release manager. Any takers?
