Amateur astronomers have certainly known about this for a while. Some have been using webcams attached to their telescopes to record images of the spots. This has come out now simply because a scientific paper has just been published about it. Unfortunately it coincides with the time when Jupiter has passed into the Sun's glare and so cannot be seen in the night sky!
