  1. Never gave it... on RadioShack Stops Being Nosy · · Score: 1, Informative

Last time I was at Home Depot ( Canadian one ), they asked "..and can I get your postal code?", to which I replied "No." Without missing a beat the clerk continued about her business of taking my money and sending me on my way, without even questioning my reponse. Guess they don't really need the info after all.

  2. Bell ExpressVu has been doing this for a year. on Time Warner to Allow Digital Recording · · Score: 1, Informative

Bell ExpressVU satellite in Canada has had the 5100 model receiver out for about a year now I think. It has a build in PVR as well. Currently the only one available in Canada (the last I looked anyways). Everythings proprietary, so no hacking fun, but at least I get to have a digital recorder to playback TV at the same quality as live.

Well, if "You get what you pay for after all." is true, I'm going back to M$.

Your best bet, from what I can see, is to write your own app in C++ with a listener on the queue. Have it invoke whatever other apps your working with. Your right in assuming that the triggers won't handle the load on NT, if they manage to work at all. Not saying they don't, they just have issues at the most inappropriate times.

  5. Remeber your being interviewed too. on How Do You Interview A Sysadmin Candidate? · · Score: 0

I once saw a great opportunity in my area. It called for a Linux admin with firewall and security in mind. I sent some emails, made some phone calls and was treated as though I were some schmuck off the street with an MSCE coat and tie. My very well written and polite emails were responded with one line answers pointing out things I'd done wrong. (I didn't know how to send a resume to a company asking for Linux help. Turns out they wanted Word docs just like everyone else.) I quickly stopped any correspondence with them and looked elsewhere, even though the job sounded damned cool.

Bottom line, treat them as you would a current (good) employee or friend. If they answer your question with some questions of their own trying to get more information, they're interviewing you and the tables have turned. Respond to them in a manner that you would want them to respond to you.

  6. Canadian web shopping... on New Federal Government Stance on Internet Taxes · · Score: 1

I'm Canadian. I try to buy from Canadian online retailers as much as possible. (The whole support your own country thing). As soon as I find a good price for something online, I add 15% tax. Its a fact of life for me. The only time I don't is when I buy from wholesaler (which doesn't always have the lowest price), where I would only pay GST. (Government Sales Tax). The way it seems to work here, is the company selling the goods has to charge tax, reglardless of how they sold it. Me, as a consumer, just has to deal with it.

  7. Don't expect much. on Canadian Post Office Moves Online in a Big Way · · Score: 1

If you any of you live in Canada and know anything about Canada Post, you will know that they received computers in each of their offices approximately 2 years ago. They have also since had to replace them all with new machines thanks to an uninformed recomendation from their "tech department". Apparently the software they were running wasn't compatible with the motherboards they installed across the country. A quick replacement of each machine and....well, it still didn't work. Canadian dollars hard at work. Given Canada Posts history, I wouldn't be too eager to load their web page for anything other than a random link. And since I heard a rumor a while back stating that Canada Post was wanting to tax every email delivered to and from Canada (just a rumor) because of the great revenue loss they had acquired, I would be cautious of this major step. Of course, I could be completely wrong and they are going to run a legitimate business.
