I think (if I remember this correctly, which I doubt) that the bending of light that we attribute to black holes could just be anything else of massive, well, mass in a rather small space. We know gravity warps light, and we see light being warped by something we can't see, that doesn't actually tell us the dimensions of it. I do know that all spherical masses (which would include most things in space) act as a point mass, so unless the light had to get really close it would be possible.

Why can't the MECOs and the black holes just set aside their differences and peacefully coexist?

Seriously, if this thing really is an MECO then what are all of the things that we've thought were black holes?

Does this mean that they are gearing their hardware toward taking full advantage of all day-zero vulenerabilities in Vista? I mean, I don't know of any as yet but I would be surprised if we didn't hit a few.

I think the important fact that we are overlooking here is the concept of a controlled veritcal landing -- one that allows for subsequent vertical take-off. Otherwise anyone with a basic knowledge of chemistry and poor instincts for self-preservation could do this much cheaper.

  8. Most Compelling Set of Characters on Final Fantasy IV Turns XV · · Score: 4, Insightful

The one thing that I thought was really good in FFIV was that the characters were given reasonable motives and grew in hard to predict but reasonable ways. I don't think you get that in many other FF games -- FFIX and FFX try, but I think that FFIV might have had the best character development.

Even if you disagree, it certainly had the best ninja-sorceress love affair ;P

It would take some doing to kill all of humanity. The Black Plague swept through Europe before we understood microbes. It cause a good deal of damage, but it never kill off everyone in any area of significant size. We survived a hundred years of industrialism without understanding the impact we had on the environment -- you think we can't survive a hundred years of knowing what we're doing? We've survived more wars than anyone would like to count, and the number of times an entire nation has been anhilated during a war is tiny. Nuclear winter is mostly conjecture, and no one wants to fire enough nukes to start that. Global warming is going to suck, but not wipe out all of humanity suck. AIDS won't take us -- we'll eventually figure out how to stop having unprotected sex with people whose histories we don't know or (more likely) find a cure of some sort. Cancer usually doesn't kill people before they hit an age where they have producted offspring. Actually, given that we've survived everything thus far and kept on going, it would take some sort of global catastrophy to kill us all. I think that nuclear winter is the best bet for end of humanity.
