  1. No carbon, no port, just cocoa on Microsoft Office On OSX, *BSD, *nix? · · Score: 1

"Microsoft has announced Office and IE5.5 for Mac OS X in mid-2001. Given that OS X is based on BSD, what are the ramifications for those trying to get these apps on unix? Seems like a generic OS X-to-unix API translation would be a lot easier than Win32 API-to-unix.

Nope, I belive Microsoft has stated that they'll be using Cocoa, Appls objective-c/c API. Quite natural really, as Office is a very large applictaion, and with all those specialised MS APIs and dialogs it uses, it would never work with Aqua.

Also, MacOS X programming, at least graphicaly, will be very different from the other systems, and as Office uses a GUI, I can't see how they could easily make a X windows/Aqua lib that works the same way. MS will not port to Linux, no way, at least not yet.

Maybe time for a command-line version of Office! =P
No, thats even more unlikely than Apple using a *NIX system on Macs...

I think Object oriented laguages like C++ or objective C represent a much better way of thinking. So why not?

    Anyway, 911 post??
This has to be a record even for slashdot!

They had a big repotasje on the news about a rich nerd who had made a service on the net to find out if somebody you knew was surfing on porn, just by enetering their email address. Complete with the norwegian IT-minister's comment, that the page would be shut down in a few weeks.
But go there and see what happens! (Norwegian only)

  5. Its a natural step, evolution. on PSX2 To Replace Your PC? · · Score: 1

The PSX2 wil be an incredibily powerfull game machine, no doutb about that, and it's powers can be used for simple matters like doing homework, sending mail, browsing the web, chatting, and playing quake 3 online. In other words all the reasons normal users have to buy a computer. It is aslo vrey cheap compared to computers (seen from my norwegian point of view...) I think the PSX is a natural evolution towards a new all-use gizmo that will replace VCR, Computer and other thecnologies. Its going to be exiting to see what sort of add-ons we will se to the PSX. It wont replace computers for all the nerds in the world, but for the home user it could theorieticaly have all it needs. And some crazy developer will end up porting Linux too it, no doubt ;) ------------------------------ St4k1n

MS is a HUGE software house...

It's got spescialised divisions on evrything, so if you split microsoft up using these divisons as a model, we would get a greate number of good software produsers! (or maybe just a large number of really bad software...)

I'm still afraid of the impact this would have on the buisniss world...I donæt really know much about it, but with a enormous marcet like MS's, it must make a really big shockwave....right?
