  1. The cost is higher than it seems on Microsoft Withholds Y2K Fix for Win95? · · Score: 1

You can't install Win98 on a system which runs below 66 MHz, so companies with tonnes of 386's and 486's (which beleive it or not still exist) under the 66 MHz mark will not only need to install Win98 to put their Y2K fears to rest, but will also have to outlay for new systems. I'm sure the minspec for Win2k will be at least a P166 with 32meg of RAM and there's a LOT of systems out there below that mark.

Even Linux suffers from the issue of spec though. Have you run dselect on a 486/33 recently, ugh.

Is anyone really suprised by this. I'm sure it will be the lead story on the news though. Bring on the FUD. The solution though is clear, if Microsoft wants to break up into three companies that each make their own OS, (what drugs is this guy on?) each with their own set of standards, then I guess it will be cheaper to develop for Linux. We'd better contact all those executives they contacted and tell them ;)

What would it take to see what the maximum rating Linux can acheive when it's not connected to a network, with no floppy drive (i.e a similar configuration to what NT passed) and also what kind of rating can be attained when it is connected to a network. I'm not sure if any system can receive C2 when its connected to a network (not familiar with exactly what their testing) but to challenge NT directly on their own turf sounds like fun. I have a sinking feeling that wads of cash are involved in getting these "certifications".

I love the way some Americans stand on their Bill of Rights and look down on the other lowly nations around the world who don't allow you to do anything you want anytime you want to anyone and then are totally shocked when the shit goes down (and you know what I mean). On another note, Television in the US is censored like you would not believe, with the stark exception of the news where they have no problem showing you anything and everything. In light of that how can you oppose similar censorship of another media format. I'm not advocating censorship but what I do advocate is laws that may ruffle the odd "right" or two but some people can't be trusted "to do the right thing" and we need to protect them and the people around them from their own stupidity.

    Where to begin ...

As an Australian working in the US (hey, someone has to do the work :)) I can't wait to get back to Australia. Lets make it REAL SIMPLE for you. (You obviously can't spell, I only hope you can read).

Here's some stats (albeit around 1994ish)

    USA
    Population: 254,250,000
    Gun Deaths: 38,317 (0.15 per 1000)
    Gun Homocides: 17,971 (0.07 per 1000)

    Australia
    Population: 18,173,600
    Gun Deaths: 596 (0.033 per 1000)
    Gun Homocides: 85 (0.0047 per 1000)

If I lived in a country where I felt that I needed firearms in case the government went sour, I'd imigrate. If you really need "iron" then I suggest you use it on yourself and stay the hell away from the rest of us. Here's some more tidbits.

    - U.S. has the highest gun related death rate among children and youth in comparison with 25 industrialized countries, 16 times more than all these 25 countries combined. (Center for Disease Control, Feb. 7, 1997)

    - In America, in just two days, more people die by handgun than in one year in Canada, Great Britain, Sweden, Australia and Japan combined. (Center to Prevent Handgun Violence)

    - Homicide rates (per 100,000 pop.) in the U.S., for males age 15 to 24 for 1992 are 37.3, the next highest rate is only 4.3 in Italy, followed by Israel 3.7, Ireland 1.8, Germany 1.1, France 0.9, England & Wales 0.6,and Japan 0.5. (CDC Report, Jan. 1995 from WHO & NCHS)

    - During the 8 years of the Vietnam War, 58,000 American soldierswere killed. More people die by guns in the U.S. every 2 years now.

    - Every 20 minutes, an American is shot to death.

This is not to say there's not a shitload of decent, inteligent Americans who also have to put up with this morons like you ... I feel their pain.

College (or University as its known to us Aussies) is damned important. You can sit around and code to your heart's content, but by doing a variety of problems in different disciplines you can develop creative problem solving skills which are invaluble. To me the most important skill one can have is the ability to solve problems they've never seen before.

Admittedly, the cost is far higher in the US than it is in Australia for tertiary education, but even if all you get out of it is a piece of paper, that piece of paper could be the difference between you and another candidate for the job you're applying for.

Degree holders also stand out from the pack since the exhibited the dedication and commitement to do so. Something employers will consider when they want you on a 2-3 year project.

On another note, most IT professionals will find it hard to be taken seriously when they still have achne. There are worse places to be whilst maturing.
