Actually, Windows drives have the following characteristics (you can see that when you mount them): rw, noexec, nosuid, nodev. That means that it's stupid to put stuff other than MP3's on them - it's an "all or nothing" access mode, sort of like mounting FAT16 from Windows NT.
It's about time that there was a good non-commercial distro out there for general sale - maybe it will eat at the profits of the commercial distros. To be honest, though, I find it annoying that everything about debian has "Copyright #%#@ Software in the Public Interest, Inc." at least twice on it. Couldn't they tone it down a little bit?
I'm running out of hard drive space right now... this is sweet. Brian's Rule For Hard Drive Space Says: Actual hard drive space=Total hard drive space/Number of OS's. I have 5 GB total / 3 OS's (Linux, Windblows, Solaris) = 1.66 GB. Yuck.
A while ago I heard of a gadget called a telco simulator. Not sure where to find one, but should provide cheap and direct access. Maybe a modification on the box they use to teach kids how to dial 911 with? (Dial 911 on one phone, rings on other).
In general, I'm not going to take such a harsh view - they're trying to get people to switch from XFree86 to AcceleratedX, and that's OK. I wouldn't mind if Sun put out an advertisement aimed towards switching people to Linux. (Still using that free OS that came with your computer? blah...) That doesn't mean that I'm going to switch to AccelX - applying Brian's Graphics Performance Test-O-Rama says:
Moving the mouse rapidly in Windows 95 uses around 29% of my CPU time.
Doing that in XFree uses around 1% of my CPU time. I actually have to be moving my mouse in a WordPerfect window with Shadow Cursor turned on to get anywhere near the Windows CPU usage.
Now I can't test this with AccelX, but the point being, that I get respectable performance in XFree86 without using any commercial software. And it's only crashed once - and I'm certain that that's not Linux's fault (It screwed up my card state so that even on the console it looked funny - characters were wrong, but there. I had to do a "blind reboot" to fix the problem). Now, if I could just get rid of all of my commercial software...
Ok, my IMPS/2 will jump around on my screen when I switch VT's from console to X, and I get huge numbers of gpm: Error in protocol in my/var/log/messages. What am I doing wrong?
Actually, the ATI drivers work excellently on my 4MB Rage IIc PCI card. XFree has only crashed once on me, and that seemed to be Netscape's fault. @$#%# Motif!
Ok... It would hurt my eyes just to read the source of that. It already hurts when I have to do windows programming in the API (it's a mess, that's why they invented MFC). Microsoft's Motto: Hiding messes behind abstraction layers. I often wonder why they actually kept the Win API in NT. If it's from the ground up, why not make a (neater) gui? Linux Long and Prosper
