1999 was an excellent year, I received some stock (VA Linux) that I sold at a nice profit. I also filed my taxes using turbo tax on the web... which then *royally* fucked me over. I put in my capital gains from the stock sale and it calculated the federal taxes but did *not* calculate the NY state taxes on it (but it calculated all my other NY state taxes correctly). At that time I was not very tax saavy, these were the first stocks I had ever owned, so I did not catch the error.
Fast forward to 2002, I receive a notice from New York state wanting their money (I think around $1500) + $400 in interest. It took me a while to figure out why the hell they wanted my money, I had to go back and do my taxes manually to see what had happened.
Of course this is many years later when that money has already gone towards school fees... turbotax royally fux0red me.
Hear, hear!
This makes a lot of sense. The conditions that possibly make companies hire H1-Bs over normal workers are artifical conditions created by the current laws that are *too* restrictive. Reduce the restrictions and allow the H1-B workers to move more easily between jobs and to compete on wages, companies will then have to hire based on ability only.
I tried access 2002 on the bok.dbf file (I had just got the dos 6.2 version of msbackup, you were ahead of me there:) and it works fine.
Here is an example:
TITTEL UNTITTEL FORFATT MEDFORF1 MEDFORF2 MEDFORF3 BIND SERIE UTGSTED AAR FORLAG ISBN DEWEY LITTYPE UNDERTYPE EMNE1 EMNE2 EMNE3 SAMNR ANTALL KOMMENTAR Doktor På Væry og Rst Fugelli Per Oslo 1977 Gyldendal Norsk Forlag 82-05-10421-4 Skjnnlitteratur Roman Historie Medisin Nord-Noreg 9 1
The name of the file cc******.001 tells you the date that the backup was made on. I think that Norton 2A shows up in the header because Norton at one point made the microsoft backup software.
Hear hear!
This is exactly the behaviour that should be encouraged from the record industry.
You can, from the comfort of your computer chair, buy the songs that you like for a mere buck (a single normally costs 7 bucks), in unecrypted format, with quality that is good enough for 95% of the population! This is exactly the behaviour that should be encouraged from the record industry.
I have a question? What is wrong with using a system where a file is locked when it is checked out and nobody else can edit it?
I have used sourcesafe for about 3 years now, it uses this menthod, and it has always worked out pretty well (although there are some issues with databse corruption when projects get very large!). It really forces discipline, if you don't checkin your code as soon as you are done then other developers will complain. You might think that you lose some flexibility here because two developers cannot work on the same file at the same time, in practice though we have found that there is very little loss. If another developer is working on a file then there is always something else that you can do on another part of the source until they are finished. Not having merge problems or anything like that is a pain.
Does anyone know of any good open source solutions that allow for this type of source management? Sourcesafe may work ok but it is far out of date now
I have not seen a single good argument that explains why Trillian should be allowed to free ride on the servers that AOL is providing?
AOL purchased those servers, pays for the bandwidth and pays to maintain the servers. I am sure that these costs are not trivial for a user base as large as AIM. Why should they let another service? Some people seem to be arguing that they should let third parties use their servers because otherwise they will loose market share and therefore eventually loose the IM race. This might be true, but I don't think that there is any need to be outraged that AOL is blocking access to these servers! They are perfectly within their rights to disallow access to third parties that use their servers without helping to maintain them.
If you are outraged at AOL's actions.. well.. just go use another network.
My company has developed an easy to use source control/document storage system that uses PHP for the server side. It has a windows client that functions like windows explorer (so non-technical users can be comfortable with it) and it will soon have a Java Swing client for cross platform capability.
The system also has an easy to use web interface for those times when you cannot access it via the client.
We geared the development of this system towards non-technically saavy users and it lacks many of the more complicated features of CVS, but it has all the features that you are looking for. (Check in/ check out/ view old versions etc..).
I can let you try a beta version right now if you are really interested!
From all accounts the Creative Jukebox is not as good as the PJB-100. Not only that but the PJB has good hacking support! The SDK which is open source and available for linux is continually updated by Compaq.
The PJB-100 has been hacked to do all sorts of stuff, including upgrading the hard drive inside to 20 gigabytes. You can even talk to the PJB developers on the mailing list.
If you are worried about the price of the PJB-100 then I would wait for the treoplayer which will be out near the end of this month. The Treo includes all of the advantages of the PJB and is only $399 and has a smaller form factor.
I can see that this will be a touching movie, a child concieved by AI. I can see why this movie will be controversial. How will AI affect our kids in the future?
Sometimes it puzzles me that AI is a hot topic right now. Why so much fuss, don't people realize that AI is being used right now, every day? This isn't some far flung theory, AI is working wonderfully. There are many industries that require AI to function.. farming for example! Sure AI needs to be controlled, I can see that, and yes, it could be dangerous if it gets of hand. There is an easy solution to this though, we need to teach our kids that sex is better than AI.
I implore you! Educate your kids now on the dangers of Artificial Insemination.
HDCP also allows supports a master lists of devices not to work with (a.k.a. Key Device Revocation).
I would expect some of the less reputable manufacturers to come out with hardware that spoofs the ID of a more reputable manufacturer. Perhaps they would make the ID somehow software changeable so that users could input whatever ID they wanted. This could cause all sorts of problems for this type of scheme.
7500 cards out of 3 million is a very very small amount. Perhaps what Egghead is saying is that the amount of fradulent activity shown is within the statistical norms for credit card fraud?
I originally learned C in highschool and then moved onto C++ in college. So I had been programming in C/C++ for about 5-6 years before I tried Java.
I would say that Java is the perfect language for introductory courses. Perhaps a good C++ programmer can produce code with no memory leaks, proper exception handling and a good object oriented structure.. but very few beginners!
Java has excellent standard classes that allow beginners to quickly get to work. Need a hashtable to experiment with.. try java.lang.HashTable. No messing around with Templates and complicated STL on top of learning basic C++.
Sure, Java may not be the best language for creating speedy GUI's but it's one of the easiest and most powerful languages to pick up quickly.
I saw it last night with a bunch of friends. My advice is that before you go into the movie prepare yourself by repeating the mantra "This will be possibly one of the worst movies I will ever see". Having lowered your expectations enough then the movie will actually be enjoyable because it is so easy to make fun of.
In the cinema where I watched the entire audience seemed to enjoy the movie. Mainly becayse they couldn't stop laughing throughout. It all started from the point where the elf opens her cloak (you'll know what I mean when you see the movie). From there on in it degenerated, people started shouting things like "Roll for find traps!" in the dungeon and laughing extremely hard whenever the queen made a speech...
All in all it was enjoyable, but just make sure that you are prepared for what you are about to see.
"To ensure the integrity of results, Parabon frequently runs canary tasks. These computations have known answers. If a bad result comes back from a canary task, Parabon no longer uses that provider."
Seems like a neat idea to prvent spoofing of results!
The Parabon application is pretty neat. Takes a while to install. It's only a 1.2 meg download and it installs pretty quickly. but it then takes about 3 minutes to register with the server. Displays a big 'Please Wait' flash animation but it doesn't show any progress bar to tell you what is happening.
You can specify how much hard drive and memory it should use.. defaults are 100 meg hard drive space and 16 megs ram. That's quite a chunk of HD space. I wonder what it needs it for.
The site is extremely informative and you can view your stats and how much your account is worth. I especially like the fact that:
"When we begin compensating providers this Fall, you may choose to donate your earnings to a charity of your choice."
Seems like a nice little app. I think I'll keep running it.
I think I owned about 2-3 CDs before MP3s (bought over 10 years or so). I now own 14 CDs. I also have a collection of about 2000+ MP3s. Wake up RIAA this is a sign.. we're a new generation.. we've got net connections and we're not afraid to use them:)
Collective Soul, Crystal Method, Prodigy.. bands that I had never listened to before. Never had the chance to - I hardly ever hear them on the radio. I own all their MP3s and guess what, I also own their CD's now. I like the music so I want it to play in the car, to have the cd case and lyrics and I want to support the band.
The RIAA has to realize that they have to *work* with these technologies. Don't be fightened.. yes there is *money* to be made here.
Perhaps a Napster like application that only allows you to share MP3s (or maybe not even users sharing, but like that QWest advertisiement contains every recording ever made and users can add to it:) at 56 kbps and has direct links *built in* to purchase the CDs, purchase a higher quality mp3, purchase the lyrics.
Is anyone interested in attempting to hack the firmware?
I'm writing a jukebox manager at the moment and I'm probably going to have a go at hacking the PJB firmware. All I know so far is that it has a Motorola 56309 DSP. I have a flash update file, "player3-215-rev-oem.img". But of course it is in some unknown format. Anyone have any ideas of a way to go about this/
Amen to that!

They were sued already. Not sure who exactly sued them and I don't know the status of the case, but it was in the news about half a year ago.
