Ok, this isn't something we want to hear, but it's true. We are evil. That's the reason you DO feel guilty when you think about those poor kids starving in third-world countries. We all know that we CAN do something to make a difference, and yet after reading something like this we all go back to our usual indulgent lifestyles. Just because everyone does it, doesn't mean it's right...
if a bit fast. I read these about a year ago, when I had much more free time than I do now. It's very entertaining, but it makes me very glad that I'm out of highschool and middleschool.
Actually, if you like Pinkwater, I would also recommend Terry Pratchett, especially the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy. Johnny Maxwell seems like a normal 12 year old, but weird things happen to him... like when he is playing his favorite video game, the aliens suddenly surrender to him instead of shooting back...or he finds out that the neighboorhood bag lady is a time traveler..
>The fan-base was an unheard of phenomenon for a TV show.
Wait a minute, did I catch this right? You think TOS had a huge fan base? I think I'll have to correct you on this...
TOS was (and is) a great show. But when they were making it, it was a complete failure. Why else do you think the "5 year mission" was over in 3 years? No one was watching it... until after it was canceled and put into syndication. Then people found out about it and realized how good it really was... and this is also why, 15-20 years later, they brought Star Trek back with TNG. I was raised on TNG, and I must admit I still like it better than TOS. But Star Trek will never die; look to TOS for an example - just when the producers thought they'd killed it, that's when it started to get truly popular.
Remember, there are quite a few girl-nerds out there, too. Who do we attract? Certainly not the jocks and "cool" guys.. that is, unless we flaunt ourselves, and what nerd that you know is going to do that? Personally, most of my guy friends are nerds, meaning that they're much better with computers than I am, good in math and science, aren't afraid to have their own interests (be it DOOM or fencing), and... oh yeah, they aren't afraid to just be friends with a girl. So many of the "cool" guys out there won't even talk to a girl that they're not interested in dating. In my opinion, if we can't be friends, why would I date him anywayP Just my $.02

Does anyone here remember the old Tandy/RadioShack laptops? Now there is a truly indestructable computer. My mother owned one, and let me play with it as a toddler. Talk about durable... I'm pretty sure it still works today. In fact, I'm planning on bringing it back to school with me after my next break.
Come on... Do you really believe that you're not going to learn anything useful in highschool? Even going to an engineering college where English is not required (yay, WPI!), you'll still need to be able to communicate with people. I took AP English in highschool, and I did terribly. But I learned so much about writing and communication that I'm now glad I took it. No matter what you do, you have to be able to get your ideas across. Since most of us use English to do this, it would be stupid to think you can get by without learning to write. I pity the students who are using these services regularly, because it means they're not learning anything. So what if you get a bad grade? It's not the end of the world, and you should be able to learn something from it. Try to learn something in those classes you hate... you'll regret it later if you don't.
I'm in college now, and my parents gave me an iMac. I love it, but at first I was very upset that there was no floppy drive. Now that I've been using it for a while, though, I've realized that I don't really need one. I have an account with the Unix server, but I honestly don't use that, either. I think perhaps floppies are becoming obsolete... you can't store that much on them anyway.

Anyway, happy reading!
