  1. Running COBOL under Linux: GNU COBOL on Experiences of Running Linux on a Mainframe · · Score: 1
Hell, you can't even RUN COBOL in Linux.

For information about running COBOL under Linux (or whatever), check out "http://www.gnu.org/software/cobol". BTW, I don't know any COBOL and I also don't know anything about GNU COBOL except that it exists. But since you seem interested, you may want to go have a look.

  2. Jon Johansen did not break the DVD copy protection on Hackers · · Score: 2
Jon Johansen did not break the DVD copy protection, because "the DVD copy protection" doesn't exist. DVDs are *playback* protected, and AFAIK Jon Johansen implemented an algorithm -- not of his making -- breaking the DVD *playback* protection. For more info, check out the OpenDVD website.

    Thank you //Johan

  3. Partitionless installs? on Red Hat 6.2 Beta on FTP Servers · · Score: 1
Can somebody please explain to me what "Partitionless installs" is supposed to mean? Is it supposed to be "re-partitioning-less installs" or what?

  4. You got the beef stuff all backwards on Anti-WTO Riot, State of Emergency in Seattle · · Score: 1
Regarding the US beef issue, you got it wrong. The US offered to mark all their hormone treated meat as such, and through that giving European consumers a choice to buy it or not. The European Union OTOH didn't want to give their people any choice, hence the quarrel.

So in this particular case (can't say anything 'bout any others), the WTO is working for the people living in Europe, for the US meat producers, and against the European governments.

  5. Have you tried Linuxconf? on Ease of Use vs. Sweat Equity · · Score: 1
If you are having trouble finding out what services are enabled on the Linux box, and how they are configured, you could try installing Linuxconf. I find it an excellent tool for managing our Linux servers in a user-friendly manner. I especially like the web frontend to Linuxconf. Linuxconf is available at "http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/linuxconf", and should install on top of your current system without any problems. Also, because Linuxconf stores its information the same way a human administrator would, it is possible to use *both* Linuxconf and by-hand configuration concurrently (although Linuxconf may kill some comments in some files). Anyway, it works very well for us, so check it out!

    Good luck! //Johan

  6. Re:ASP is a blessing...ASP is a curse... on It's the Developers, Stupid!: The Real NT-Linux Battle · · Score: 1
Try PHP. Use MySQL or PostgreSQL as backend. If conversion from ASP to PHP is an issue, you could look into sending some of the money you save by taking the Unix route to the author of asp2php.

    Best of luck to ya'.

  7. A task for distributed.net? on DVD for Linux: an Interview With the Developers · · Score: 1
If the DVD MPEG stream is encrypted with a key available only by paying money and signing an NDA, wouldn't it be a very cool task for distributed.net to crack this key?

    //Johan

Disclaimer: I really have no clue about DVD, so I'm well aware of that this idea may be a very silly one indeed.
