Wow, it is amazing how people will take up for the big guy, even when the big guy is not in the right of way sort to speak. Just like we as consumers have to abide by laws and licenses, the businesses and corporations must and should play by the same rules too!
The whole problem here is not based on the licensing of the GPL or BSD and how the licenses control usage of software that the companies or corporations use, but the fact that the companyies that *CHOOSE* to use the code written by someone who is not on thier payroll or in their company roster, therefore cutting down the time it takes them to have to make code and send out the product (in other words they are benefiting as well). Those companies and corpotations only want to play by the rules that will benefit them only, including ignoring the recpective parties who developed the code orignially and by not obeying the GPL or BSD licensing!
These companies and corportations write up licensing and EULA's for same such reasons and expect you to abide by them (those companies and corporations even enact leagal proceedings when they feel the agreements have been broken), shouldn't the developers of the GPL & BSD expect the same? I believe so!
Personally I don't care that these companies and corporations use the GPL, BSD, LGPL or any licensed code/software for that matter as long as they stick with the licensing respective rights reserved. But if these businesses or corporation companies go and use the code/software that is not theirs in the first place, they should at least - as Microsoft just recently put it - Play by the rules (the irony of them saying that.. unreal! should we take a look under the hood of XP and Vista???) - That would be what the license of the GPL and BSD state how you can use the code - nothing more... and nothing less. This seems to be hard for the businesses and corporation parties to do, mainly because they feel they have to make $$$ off of every last item they do or put to the market.
Once again I have not problem that these companies and corporations use GPL & BSD licensing, but they need to stay with in the guidelines of the license and not complain when they decided they don't want to abide by the licensing. There is tons of software that is licensed under other respective licensing. They can use those software, pay for the rights to a company that makes software, buy those companies or develope there own stuff. Its as simple as that, but to complain about a license just because you have your own agenda, and don't want to allow progress, creativity, and innovation to the industry? That is lame, and an a unwarranted argument.
Unfortunately these such licenses as the GPL & BSD licens have to exist, so that the greedy, corruptible and such people who have no moral fiber will not be able to infringe on other corporation, company, consumer, or users rights, by doing anything they please and not allowing credit or avability to give back what they themselves have also gained from the community.
These companies and corporations have gained help through using these GPL or BSD licensed code or programs, which in a business setting is usually compensated by money to the party who developes the code/program, but in the case of the company using GPL, the owner/devloper of the code is allowing the company or corporation not pay, but only give back to the development of the code or program used. I think this is beyond fair for the companies and corporations to have to abide by since it truley is a win-win situation in the long run for both parties.
First off I would like to point out that this is not only pointed at this current issue, but any issue that we face in the United States that has to do with Legistlation, law making and the like.
I agree that this is bad, (I am talking more to the US States crowd) just like most planned initiatives by lobbist, our Congress and Government it is usually only Big Business and Government friendly but most people here at Slash and anywhere else don't voice there concerns DIRECTLY to there local and federal govenment contacts letting them know they disapprove of this type of issues. Whether it includes new legistlature or new means of reform you must stand up and be counted - especially if you don't like what is going on!
Things like this are wrecking our economy and small business avalibility to stay afloat. We can all see the truth and nature of this game. Voices make the difference in a silent world!
Why complain if your not going to do anything about (contacting via email / phone your representatives to voice your concerns and get involved). Yes it takes time and effort, but dosen't most things done for good reasons? This stuff frustrates me as well, but I have decided to taken a pro-active stance and choose to step up to the plate and be active toward concerns like this.
How about others who complain about these items do the samething, instead of just gripping about them. We can all make a difference, especially if we do it individually in large numbers.
You can only blame yourself if you don't get involved and do something about it.
The U.S. Patent System needs more then an overhaul. It is the reason that innovatioon and creativity is failing in America. As well as small business.
Small companies have no true avalibility to compete with corporations on a level playing field because of the Patient system. It is designed to help people such as the corporations who have deep pockets.
This new patent system overhaul will only promote big company to sow large amounts of money into patients for items that they never tried out, invented, use or will use. Case in point - Microsoft purchased over 6000 patients in a sum of so many years, I can tell you they are not even using most of them, nor are they legit to the workings of Microsofts exsistance for it's business models.
Corporations will only use this new systen as road blocks to styful other company's, projects, products, creativity, and workmanship. Thus taking from the community, public domain and small business. Only further hurting community, public domain, and small business and causes them to fail.
As far as this Patent stuff, it has never helped anything but to pad the wallets of big company's and law firms.
Lets go back to allowing true innovation and creativity through not having to reinvent the wheel over and over again.
Most things in the market place have derived from one invention, idea, product or another before it. This tells me that the patent system will never work. In reality it was never put in place to help the true nature of competitive business or good business. It actually works against it.
At the time of Blackbird, it was Microsofts secret weapon against on-line services, such as America Online, and the W3C group. (that was Microsofts big enemies at the time.)
Silverlight is just the same type of combative propietery software to make the same issues for linux (incompatibility issues so people will not want to run it anymore and stick with XP and Vista.)
Becarefull to adopt propriety software such as Silverlight as it puts limits to your use of your computer and your choice! It also seems to push up the cost of something that could be free of charge.
Hope everyone can at least take that in to consideration.
Our country has many exciting oppertunities and yet they are being stripped from us because of our government is pushing other countries away from our trust by trying to institue messure that they have *no* constitutional right or global right in doing. Making laws with out the correct due process, without checks and balance. This is not a correct process of allowing such a decission to be addressed. The people in America are the governing voice via the constition, bill of rights and declaration of indepencence for the laws of the land, unfortunately our people are to lazy and content in believing what the news tells them. Unfortunatley when they recongnize the truth and the consquences of the government taking power not reserved for them, it will be late in the game.
As far as the US powers trying to take control of the master keys for DNS, this is just another assertion of their direct disobedience of established law in the United States and other countries.
All the years of estabishing this great thing we of this world call the internet, the same institution people and citizens of every nation enjoy on a daily basis could be dismantled because of these type of haphazard attempts to secure things they believe should be in their grasp. At the cost of possibly causing hardships between trusting nations. Why try to implement plans that would possibly destroy a major source(s) of revenue, communication(s), commerce, and avalibility in the name of security (which isn't theirs to take in the first place, and they won't be able to secure it, only be able to leveage the avalibility to monitor it. Once again something that is not constitutional or ethical.).
This is not an answer to securing America or any country (only creates more distrust between nations), you can find many other ways to get more secure, monitor and get accurate ways to protect all nations then jeperdizing free enterprise and the internet as a whole.
If your a linux gamer, it's time you spoke up and let the developers and publishes know you are looking for companies support of native linux games. Once they figure out that there is realestate on the linux desktop they will start testing the waters.
Check out the patetion you can sign to speak out and let them know you want games! http://www.gamersforlinux.com/index.php

Blackbird reincarnated? (Microsoft playing the same game at a later date)

Since Linux can proform well with latest standards in media, Microsoft is pushing a new on of their own to mess this up.
They tried to do this once before with BLACKBIRD.
