  1. Re:One wonders... on OS X Snow Leopard Details · · Score: 1

OS X Tiger isn't buggy, Leopard on the other hand is a steaming pile. I have constant problems with it, both at work and at home. Hell, iTunes, an app you think Apple would have put some effort into perfecting, manages to crash on a daily basis. I hit the little report button, but Steve is so obsessed with the iPhone it seems Leopard bugs are getting the cold shoulder. I think you should check your RAM or HDD. I work with hundreds of computers running Leopard and find that in general, they're more stable than Tiger or (especially) Panther systems. Especially since the 10.5.2 release.
  2. Haven't we seen this before a billion times? on Sony Says UMD Is Here To Stay · · Score: 1

Sony is learning the same lessons Apple learned. Until very recently, and even still to this day to a lesser extent, Apple tends to lock-in their formats and protocols to only work with Macintosh computers. Sony does the same thing with the PSP, with the Playstation 3, with their Vaio computers, and their camcorder/still camera lineup. It's become even more detrimental in recent years though, as people become more aware of interoperability and open standards. But I think Sony's intentions aren't entirely greed; partially I think they want the same thing Apple wanted: to offer users a simpler, more streamlined experience by having everything line up perfectly. Once you take this a step too far, though, you turn simplicity into slavery.

So Microsoft is going for the geriatric market? Maybe they just hope that the younger crowd will inherit their grandparents' zunes when they die.

  4. Re:awesome machine on Apple Ships 8-Core MacPro · · Score: 1

It's interesting that you would compare the Cube, which is by all accounts a massive failure, with the iMac, which is arguably the best-selling computer of all time.

I mean, I like cubes, but it was a bad idea. Apple used to offer half-crippled computers like that, with one PCI or NuBus slot, and 90% of them went unused. That's why Apple just ships machines with no expansion; they realized that the only people who would use them were people who would have no business owning such a computer.

The whole thing about iMacs being not expandable is a non-issue to the average consumer, most PC users don't even know they can upgrade their computer!

It's a sad fact we computer nerds don't like to admit, but most people don't use their computers to their fullest potential as it is, let alone need more than their computer can provide.

After all, as long as nothing changes on a system (no new software, peripherals, etc.) then there's really no reason to upgrade. If all I needed was word processing a Mac Plus running OS 6 would be a great, fast, machine, to this day. And as we all can tell from all the people running Windows 98, many, many people do not upgrade their operating systems.

  5. Re:CmdrTaco's review on AppleTV Hits the Streets · · Score: 1

I think everyone here is too technically savvy to understand the scope of this product. It is not a Media Center PC competitor, all it is is the equivalent of the AirPort Express for Video playback, plus the option for local storage. This isn't meant to be any end-all entertainment center, it's just a segway from Apple's computer lineup to your living room. If you want an end-all Media Center PC, get a Mac Mini and an elgato eyetv :) The only thing I can agree with as being a detractor for the AppleTV is it's lack of non-HD outputs.

  6. Alas, the woes of the bleeding edge on Virtual Reality Getting its Own Network? · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's almost unfortunate that this would never work out, be it a hoax or not. As someone mentioned earlier, until there are users on the network, no company will buy domains for it, but until people buy domains for it, there will be no network. The exaggerated scope of it seems to make me think it's a hoax though. If they would just make small VR arcades, or VR cafes or what have you, and then network those in a small area, and then gradually grow larger and larger, then maybe that would be viable. But to propose to instantly shoot out from coast to coast? This is either a scam or a really, really, poorly thought out operation.
