  1. An idea for a "non geek" book on Ubuntu Linux for Non-Geeks · · Score: 1

I've been using Linux for 2 years now and just love it. When I started it was really difficult getting things to work. Over time I learned how to get Linux to do what I wanted but the most important thing I learned was how to find answers to problems I get, whether it can be solved by reading the man page, do I need to google and whether I have ask for a solution on IRC or some forum.
Since I got confident about using linux Ive been trying to get my friends and family to switch to Linux they love Linux, they love not having to deal with anti viruses and the logical structuring of everything. They keep asking their problems but the problem comes when someone is not there to help them with it. They don't read the man pages, they never google. Once one problem becomes two they'll say windows is better at this thing and in a short amount of time they are back to using windows.
In every "non geek" book there should be atleast one detailed chapter on how to find solutions to your problems where everything like --help,man pages, info pages, google,IRC,websites and forums is explained. I don't think its enough to give an appendix telling the readers these are some websites you might get some help on. The "non geeks" should learn to search for information if they want to use Linux.

I've actually had to ban users with hostmasks indicating they were using government internet connections. I even went to the trouble of tracking down the name of one individual and contacting their boss about their behavior.
It's none of your fucking buisness that someone is wasting their time on a gaming site instead of working.

Im very much against invasion of privacy. I don't have problem with any of the people in our organization spending 10-20 minutes in a day checking personnel email or even checking out random sites. We have complete logs of all the user's activity but Im only bothered if they are using a huge amount of bandwidth or doing something completely inappropriate(like in illegal). There are times when you have to take action(like the guy I got fired because of downloading pr0n(Around 500MB daily) and doing it again after my warning) but most of the people I know understand their responsibilities and aren't completely reckless.

  3. Re:Redundant feeds on How Much Does Your Work Depend on the Internet? · · Score: 1

Redundancy doesn't always work, instead of using an expensive single connection we were using 4 cheaper connections(with N+1) redundancy. The connection of the mailserver went down and immediataly we switched to the failover connection changed the MX record but what we didn't realize was it was in Spamhaus SBL and XBL. For some strange reason we didn't get any bounced mail till hours later and then we had to again change the connection again. The primary connection took a day to be a back up. Just proves whatever you may do sometimes you just get screwed.

  4. Re:Look at LTSP.ORG on Experiences with Replacing Desktops w/ VMs? · · Score: 1

We are using LTSP with about 20 dumb terminals with even dumber users. Its quite fast and easy to maintain, for backups and addition/removal of programs. We don't even have gigabit ethernet but I don't see much of network problems. The best thing is the cost all the dumb terminals are old 133 MHz machines with 64 MB RAM but the performance is great.

  5. Re:What if windows ever did secure itself? on Windows' Patchguard Hinders Security Vendors · · Score: 1

Microsoft decides to create a secure OS.
Most popular software for windows is Microsoft's(IE Office suite etc).
These software should work on the new secure OS
Microsoft can't create 'secure' versions of these software for their new 'secure OS'.
Microsoft gives up on the secure OS.

btw a lot of windows software does break from one version to next, the compatibility mode?
