Funny you should bring this up. I was listening to NPR the other day and they were talking to people that play Counter Strike, in teams, to compete in a playoff type of tournament. They want these games to be cosidered sports.
Perhaps they hear about stuff like the DMCA, think it makes sense (on the outside, it kinda does. It stops those evil hackers). Same with he SSSCA or whatever it's called now.. who would want to stop the copyright owners from getting what they desirve.
Perhaps it's YOUR fault for not getting out there enough to educate the public, not the people that don't understand what's going you. You do, you should be out there telling everybody.
"What do you think you have an immune system for? It's for killing germs! But it needs practice. It needs germs to practice on. So, listen, if you kill all the germs around you and live a completely sterile life, then when germs do come along, you're not going to be prepared. And never mind ordinary germs, what are you going to do when some supervirus comes along that turns your vital organs into liquid shit? I'll tell you what you're gonna do. You're gonna get sick, you're gonna die, and you're gonna deserve it, cuz you're fuckin weak, and you've got a fuckin weak immune system."
Well how do you get money on the card? If you do it in the same machine that that machine probably keeps track of the ID money information. It's very rare for the card itself to keep the ammount of money on the card.
usually those type of systems only keep an ID on your card, and keep the ammount in a computer somewhere. So doing anything to the card won't effect the ammount of money linked to it.
The iButton has some weird user/developer license (I'm sure some smart cards arn't any better). Also some iButtons use Java, and that brings on another layer of lame licensing. That's why one person I know won't mess with them. I however think they're way cool. I really like the ones that work as a key to open doors, and then you get one of those iButton rings. It's all James Bondish:)
"'Microsoft seems to be playing the role of the referee who decides whether any innovations succeed"
Microsoft was the only one willing to use your crappy "product". Then they realized it was crap, and decided to stop using it. It's not even like most stuff where they buy/steal/copy it, they just didn't want it anymore because it was stupid.
My 3100 didn't work, but I know people with 4100s where the hack did work. Had to do with my firmware version. I know it works, I know people that have done it.
What?! I worked for MediaOne (and this is what became ATTBI) in 2000. They never had speeds that fast.. they had (and I still have as a ATTBI customer) 1.5Mb/s down and 384Kb/s up.
How? If it's a jury trial the jury would never know about the modular version, and they wouldn't be allowed to say "we have it, but MS won't let us show it" because they will.. after MS gets to examine it, and it's within their rights to request it.
If it's not a jury trial, then the judge(s) can't take it into consideration when they make their decision because it was never introduced as evidence.
That these spammers are sharing e-mail address.. or could Nadine be using the same bogus email all over the internet? I know I do. I go to a site that requires my e-mail address for nothing more then spamming purposes (like to dl some software, Acrobat for example) and I type in a bogus email address.. And I usually use the same one. It seems logical to me that Nadine could be doing the same thing.. And this poor guy owns the domain that she picked.
Sure, some of it could be from spammers sharing addresses and lists, but some of it might not be.
Why is this ethically wrong? that's the way the BSD license was designed so that people could do that.. If they didn't want that to happen, they would have used a difference license. And if you say "well they didn't think anybody would" then why do they continue to do so, even after it's happened? You'd think they would change the license.
"or take handwritten notes in a notebook on one screen while paging through a book on the other screen"
You can keep notes in class, teachers can make lesson notes in it the night before, they can point out stuff in the book. Another nice feature would be a highlight function, so you can use your stylus as a highlighter. Very cool
But the point is to organize.. At the hight of the on-line community I was a part of we'd have "events" at least once a week. Be it going to the movies, play kickball, rollerskating, or whatever, we made it a point to get out and get together, away from the computers.
At one point I was part of a really fun online community (I will not mention it because I no longer belong to it, and their webserver is having enough issues as it is right now). It was a lot of fun, we had all kinds of fun events and most of us got along really well.. Then it started to fall apart. The age difference between us really started to grow once som of us got over 21, then people wanted to have events where you had to be over 21 (like go to a local bar). This really cut off some of the members that were still under 21. Then people started having different interests, some of them got into drugs while others were really against drugs. Then both sides started to try to get more people to join in and back them up untill finally I had enough and left. I tried to form my own community for some of the people that felt the same way I did, but it just didn't work out. I'm still friends with the people that I was friends with in the community, but I don't belong to that community anymore. The things that were there that made me want to be part of it are not there anymore.
On a side note, it is interesting how people hold grudges and such, even on an online community. Still, on my online journal, and when I comment on friends, people that had nothing better to do in our chat room then insult me still do it, even after being gone for over two months now.
I've seen a lot of posts about why not TiVo and why Replay.. Here's the deal:
1. TiVo by default does not remove commercials. You either have to hit your fast foward button, or enable the 30sec skip backdoor code. And either way you still have to be there to do it. The new ReplayTV units remove the commercials automatically so you don't even know they are there at all.
2. ReplayTV allows sharing of problams to other ReplayTV units (also to computers running a program to make the ReplayTV think the computer is another ReplayTV). Now, again, this isn't a big deal until you realize that I can get HBO and record Six Feet Under or Sopranos and now share them with people that don't pay for HBO. This would be in effect the same as buying a movie, and copying it for others that don't own the movie.
Also, TiVo does collect user data, but it's ANONYMOUS, it does not link you to your TiVo unit unless you call in for service and they half to (they have you key something in on the remote). You can also make a 5min phone call and be removed from this.
This is the point. I have every right to speak out against Nike, I can say whatever I want as long as I can prove it. Nike should have the same right to give an alternate viewpoint and to try to prove me wrong. But when they say something like they don't use sweatshops, when they really do, well that's fraud, and that's illegal.
Freedom of speech is a good thing, for both indiduals and corporations, but they must be held accountable for what they say.
Why? because you're to stupid to see the Verisign logo on the mailing they sent?

Should Sony have sent a C&D to Blizzard? Perhaps.
It is okay to share music with your friends? Sure.
Is a P2P network a group of your "friends"? Probably not.
Is bringing MP3s to work okay? Sure, why not.
Is using company time and bandwidth to download and search for MP3s on a P2P network a good idea? uhh, NO, you're at work!

Oh yah, because ALL GPL code must work flawlessly right?
Did you even look at it? it's not a dual head laptop, it's more like an ebook with a folding screen.. Probably not much bigger then a normal book.

You just keep telling yourself that, and eventually it will happen :)
