Seriously though, it's not much to do with religion as much as the *type* of religious people, methinks.
Germany is not too far off the top of the list, yet a substantial amount of their population profess Christianity/Catholicism. Two of the three parties that make up the ruling coalition party in Germany at the moment are the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union. IMHO, the difference between religious people in USA and those in Germany though, would be that the Americans take a more literal view of the Bible, whereas the Germans understand that the Bible speaks in allegories etc and is *not* a scientific document explaining precisely how we came about.
