How do they know it's Nina's? DNA testing? Where did the known good sample come from?
Did Nina have access to the car during the divorce?
Did anyone else have access to the? Like that shady character she was with who made Hans do "Death Yoga"?
She was last seen by Hans at his house before she made a grocery run. Her car was found with those groceries.
So the evidence would suggest that the computer programmer, who would be both logical, and calculating, decided not to murder his wife at his home. Rather, he tailed her to the grocery store, brutally murdered her in public, and then, without bothering to coat her body or his car in plastic, shoves her bleeding body into his car and goes on his merry way to dispose of her body.
Most probable, indeed. I mean, he knew where she lived, and they're two years into the messy divorce. He's had ample opportunity to do a good job killing her. Why would he do it in such a messy, haphazard way?
I am a landlord. The 7 federally protected classes for housing are:
race
color
national origin
religion
sex
familial status
handicap
Your state or locality can add additional protected classes, but those 7 are always protected.
so you can't be denied housing because you're divorced, or because you have an annuity and don't work a job for a living.
Both of those statements are false. Source of income is protected in some jurisdictions, but not mine, and "familial status", while federally protected, doesn't mean what you think it means.
The remedy is a civil suit against the officer and the department for unlawful arrest and/or false imprisonment.
That statement is true, but it only tells half the story. In practice, you will likely lose that lawsuit even if you happen to be a minority, and if you are not a minority, then you are going to lose.
The courts give tremendous latitude to law enforcement to "do their job." Unfortunately, one person's 24-48 hour inconvenience is not enough to restrict the police's arresting powers. So say the US courts, anyhow.
In practice, a cop can arrest you for any reason or no reason, and there is little, if anything, you can do about it. Unless that cop is arresting you every thursday morning just to mess with you, you're going to have no recourse as a practical matter.
I'm sure any forensic detective worth his salt could find my wife's blood in my car, but I can assure you that she is very much alive (at least, as of 10 minutes ago).
What a trip to the emergency room that was, though.
You are confusing civil and criminal law. There is no requirement that both parties be present at a civil trial. If one party is not present he will lose by default.
Of course, many times it is possible to get that judgment vacated and a new trial if the nonpresent defendant can demonstrate a good reason for missing the trial. I would be shocked if a judge wouldn't grant a new trial for a defendant who was stuck in a hurricane, but stranger things have happened.
Not that it looks like this woman can afford a new trial anyhow, but I would be shocked if she couldn't get one if she could afford it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I get the feeling you also haven't pursued the topic much.
Actually, it's quite the contrary. I try to ask folks, like yourself, who seem to know a lot about the subject and can speak confidently about current oppression of black people. I find it unacceptable that people should be oppressed, whether because of skin color or any other reason, and I want to know what I, as a white person, might be doing unknowingly to oppress black people. If there is something, then I sure as heck want to change it. But how can I change if I don't even know what to change?
Besides the fairly obvious (IMO) factors arising from their social history
Actually, it is not obvious to me why slavery, which ended 6.5 generations ago should have any lingering effects. Do you honestly look at a black person and think "freed slave"? I sure don't, and I doubt you do either.
I agree that Jim Crow laws persisted a long time after slavery was abolished, but that was 3 generations ago. I consider myself to be a reasonably-well-educated person, yet I don't even know who Jim Crow was or even if he was a real person.
many American standardized tests (including the SAT) have shown a consistent bias towards white, middle- or upper-class Americans.
Fortunately, we have Affirmative Action to compensate for this bias.
Promises made to the newly freed slaves weren't kept, and they had to start out, not only at the bottom of society, but working against:
a) Incredible prejudice, violence, etc.
Would 40 acres and a mule back in the 1860-1870's have really made the difference? What if each black person were today given the modern day equivalent, say, a reliable automobile and a Treo, would that make the difference?
I understand the issues of prejudice and abuse that the freed slaves faced, but were those not faced by members of every wave of immigration to the United States? The Irish were not welcome here. They were the victims of blatant discrimination and violence. Ditto for the Germans, the Jews, the Italians, the Poles. Yet we don't hear about how this discrimination continues to affect them to this very day. Most young people don't even know that it occurred at all.
b) Their own animosity toward our society built up by generations of abuse.
Now this is an interesting one. Any suggestions on how to cure this? I mean, it's been generations since the abuse happened, as well.
The gist is that if you can't, you have something of a smoking gun to back up all those statistics that you earlier dismissed.
I don't dismiss or deny any statistics. I'm merely asking for the story behind the numbers. I want to hear the mechanism of how white people are causing the suffering of black people. I understand very well how white people caused black people to suffer centuries ago. What I do not understand, is how white people cause black people to suffer in 2006.
If it is the case that white people cause black people to suffer in 2006, I believe that we must put a stop to it. But we can't put a stop to it if we don't first identify the problem. You assert that there is a problem. I'm asking you to identify it. The causes of it. Use all the statistics that you want, but I assert that statistics alone will not help solve the problem because they don't identify the problem. Saying that group A scores X points lower than group B on the SAT is fine, and I'm sure it's accurate. But that isn't the problem. If it were the problem, we could solve it easily enough by simply changing the scores of group A to match that of group B. But surely you must agree that that statistic alone does not prove repression of group A by group B. So that's why I asked for more than statistics. I want to know how group B represses group A, if that repression is occurring at all. How else can we solve it?
I gaurantee you are getting more than 1000 attempted logins per day.
Well, first of all, I'm not. But even if I was, bring it on.
None of the standard UNIX accounts have login access except root.
My sshd only accepts pubkey authentication
The root account has no authorized keys
So, really, if you want to log into my system, you need to guess a valid account name and a valid private key. If you have the resources to do this, I would hope you could think of a better way to get access to my computer.
Any systemic oppression of an entire people, such as that which still exists in America today against blacks
Could you please tell me how blacks are systemically oppressed in the US today? I've heard many people make that claim, but I have never been told the actual mechanism by which white people systemically oppress black people in 2006.
I ask, because I'd be interested in getting rid of it. If it's actually there. But I don't even know where to begin, because I don't even know what white people, in 2006, are doing wrong.
Oh, and before you respond, I'm not interested in statistics without the causes of those statistics. I can google for x% of black people make less than $y per year for any value of x or y, but that doesn't tell me what white people are doing to cause this, or if white people are causing it at all. If we are to ever stop oppression, we must identify the mechanisms of the oppression. This is why I would be interested in learning about.
Fact is, 16% of families with children in the USA don't manage to feed themselves adequately
That uncited "fact" sounds a little silly. What exactly does "adequate feeding" mean? Not following the Online Food Pyramid or something?
Tens of millions of people seek emergency food assistance from charities every year.
So they are eating. Good, then we are doing our jobs.
46% of African-American children are chronically hungry.
It may not be politically correct to say this, but eff it. They sure don't look very hungry to me. At any rate, I walk past a food-assistance station on the way home from work every day and I don't see anybody being turned away hungry, African-American or otherwise.
Cuba has better infant mortality rates than the USA.
Why, yes, they do. Cuba has 6.5 deaths per 1000 live births, and the US has 6.6. Funny, isn't it, the hundreds of thousands of Cubans who have attempted to navigate the Florida Straits by makeshift raft in an attempt to reach the United States. If only they knew how high the US infant mortality rate was in comparison to their native Cuba they could have saved themselves the trouble. Or could it be that they lived in real poverty in Cuba and preferred to live in air-quotes "poverty" in the US, which means only 1 plasma television set.
Also, with income of less than $20,000 for a family of 4
...exclusive of public, private, and charitable assistance. I have residents who make less than $20k of W-2 and are technically living in "poverty", but they have incoming cash flow of way more than $20k when you count all sources.
You couldn't have possibly read what you just typed.
Just ask any one of the millions of poor people, or immigrants getting paid wages lower then what can sustain them.
Immigrants, by definition, are here by their own free will. If they don't like the "psychology" of living much better in the US than they did in Mexico, they wouldn't make the dangerous trek through the desert.
Do you know any actual "poor" people? I do. Some of my residents (I own rental property) live below the poverty line. That's right. According to both the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, these people are living in "poverty".
The fact is these folks get along just fine. They have cash flow that is not counted as income for poverty-testing purposes and, inclusive of public assistance and under-the-table work, they make way more than what would be considered "poverty" for families of their size. Forget about having enough to eat, these folks all have high-end televisions (much nicer than mine), satellite TV (I don't even have cable), meals out at restaurants, and medical costs paid for by the government (or free clinics). This is a strange definition of "poverty", which is why I use the air quotes around the word.
Not that I begrudge them their high standard of living. I don't wish true poverty on anybody. All I'm saying is that when you read these "poverty" numbers, they include people like these who don't (or can't... Some of my residents are totally disabled) have over $20,000.00 of W-2 income, but receive money from other sources and live just fine. To say that these folks live in true poverty is ludicrous. I'd be interested to see the numbers of people who truly cannot eat (how long does it take to panhandle $1.00? That's a double-cheeseburger at McDonalds, and potable water is free.)
Travel to a third-world country once to see what true poverty looks like. We're talking no access to clean water. No access to anything that westerners would consider shelter. Inadequate food. No hospitals. No schools. For large populations of people. Nothing. This is poverty, and this does not exist anywhere in the US that I am aware of. That is why you have immigrants risking life and limb to immigrate to the US both legally and otherwise. I don't blame them for coming here to live in air-quotes "poverty". In their shoes, I'd probably do the same thing.
Take a look at credit card company websites, if you're paying online, both of the ones I've used make you jump through extra hoops to reschedule your payment to transfer now
Try American Express. When you pay online, they give you a dropdown so you can select what day you want your payment to go through. The dropdown contains all dates between the earliest possible date you can pay (probably the next business day or whatever) and your due date. You pick the day you want your payment to post.
Contrast that with Citibank. They also give you a dropdown, but sneakily, they give you all dates between now and your due date, plus another week! So if you are in the habit (like I am) of just selecting the last date in the dropdown, you are paying late. Hello, Citi! What rational person who is scheduling a payment, would knowingly schedule it late? Do you think that people just pay late fees to get their jollies? Fortunately, I've never been burned by that, but I'm sure they've collected many millions of dollars in late fees for that "feature".
It's been many, many years since I was a teenager, and that noise irritates me to the point that I could not enter the store. Even if I could stand it, I'm sure as heck not going to subject my kids to it.
These business owners need to consider whether or not they are getting a good return on their noise-pollution investment.
I'm sure that anyone with a 7th-grade level math education would understand that "the function I wrote on the chalkboard" represents "the amount of paint required to paint a wall whose height varies" (total BS, by the way. You've obviously never actually painted anything if you truly believe that.);) The problem is, the 7th grader, high school senior, and indeed, most people who have ever learned calculus don't have the foggiest notion of how or why a definite integral represents the amount of carpet required to carpet a floor with one weirdly-shaped wall. I would include myself in that category of people.
I personally don't have the first clue why or how the definite integral is the "carpet-unrolling function". I have no clue why or how the derivative represents the slope of the tangent line, despite learning how to do derivatives the "hard way" (get the 'h' out). It makes no sense to me, and I learned calculus through rote memorization.
The experience of learning calc this way was so bad, that I resent the Computer Science department's forcing me to learn any symbolic math at all.
After all, what computer does symbolic math? I loved my numerical methods courses. So simple, so logical, so practical. I can solve all those stupid symbolic math problems to whatever tolerance you want in mere nanoseconds. What's more, I can actually store the result of the computation.
Don't get me wrong, I would by happy as a clam to understand symbolic math. I wish somebody would explain it to me in a way that actually makes sense, rather than, "Memorize these 192 formulae if you intend to pass this course." Until then, the only correction I can offer to people who claim that "Math is hard" is that, "No, math is not hard. Math is easy, but learning math is hard because it's so boring doing rote memorization."
I just had a funny thought. When a fraternity forces students to do rote memorization, it's called "hazing." When the math department forces students to do the same thing, it's called "education."
This has absolutely nothing to do with MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2, MSSQL, or the SQL language at all. Nice offtopic rant about MySQL, though.
The fact is, code vulnerable to SQL-injection is database platform-independent. The vulnerability is at a higher level. Do you really think forcing these lazy people to use a "harder" database that takes more time to administer and learn will make them write secure front-end code? Hardly. It'll probably make the front-end code even more rushed.
You want no more SQL-injection? Use prepared statements and bind variables. If you roll your own input-escaping code, you'll foul it up. Doesn't matter what database you're using on the backend. If you foul it up, your Oracle database will be just as vulnerable as your MySQL database.
But please don't let that stop you from mindlessly ranting about MySQL.
Yeah, but one of those functions was written by the guy who coded the database driver with the relevant specs in his hand, and the code has been looked over by many people and used in many production systems. The other code was written by some lazy hack who couldn't be bothered to just use bind variables or doesn't even know that they exist.
Whose code do you trust? I know whose code I would trust.
Get in the habit of using prepared statements and bind variables. Even when you are writing something quick and dirty.
If you ever find yourself writing SQL queries without prepared statements and bind variables, erase the code and rewrite it with prepared statements and bind variables.
If you still find yourself writing SQL queries without prepared statements and bind variables, slap yourself twice across the face--once for each cheek--and then erase the code and rewrite it with prepared statements and bind variables.
If you still find yourself writing SQL queries without prepared statements and bind variables, obtain a hammer and smash all of the fingers on one hand until they are no longer usable. Find a friend to smash the fingers on your other hand until they are no longer usable. Then, you can write no more lousy, insecure code.
Not only that, but he is comapring an OEM product with a fully-supported one. The $299.00 version of RHEL WS comes with:
Web and phone-based comprehensive support 9am-9pm
4 hour response
Unlimited incidents
What kind of support does your OEM XP license provide? None, of course. To compare apples to apples, you'd need to compare RHEL WS with Windows XP Pro retail, which costs $299.00 and includes two support requests. After that, it's $35.00 per request.
Roxio decides that it's sick of throwing money at unprofitable Napster and shuts it down. The music you paid for no longer works since it can't phone home.
You buy a song to listen to on your iPod but you later decide you like iRivers better. Now you get to buy the song again.
You buy a song and decide you don't like it and want to sell it to somebody else on eBay who might enjoy it. Possible with a CD. Not with DRM'ed tracks.
You buy a new computer and suddenly none of your music works anymore. You have to buy it all again.
That's just off the top of my head. DRM sucks. The media distributors need to remember what they are: distributors. Most people would pay money to receive a professionally ripped track on a high-speed pipe rather than try to download a low-bitrate track with audio artifacts from some hack in a dorm room in Timbuktu.

STBE: Your honor, I had no idea. Once I found out, I knew that I just had to get my children out away from that bad man.
Judge: I would have done the same thing. Full custody for STBE. I'm setting child support at $1,500.00 per month. Next!
