Depends. Microsoft's behaviour is an excellent example of just such tactics - educated the consumers to buy Windows. And look what it did for them. They set the example everyone followed.

Rubbish. We all know who the enemy is, so what, how does that help? You make no attempt to suggest a better solution. If the cure for a disease has undesirable side effects then maybe we need to find a better cure. By blacklisting their IP addresses, the 'enemy' simply move to a new address. Why not give the spammers dedicated IP addresses to use - then the users themselves can filter the mail received from those addresses.

  3. Theres no difference at all on Moving From Tech Into Management? · · Score: 1

Just keep applying yourself and doing whatever it is that has made you successful so far. Obviously you have to be good at problem solving to get where you are today, but what is the single most important thing that got you there? The ability to analyse a problem, come up with a solution and do the grunt work to carry it through . Not just any old way, but with the unique flair and ingenuity which is your personal hallmark. As an engineer you had to deal with computers and software, as a manager you will be dealing with people and schedules. So what makes you think it will be so different?

I don't consider the US very welcoming to skilled immigrants

As a European and one of those skilled workers you mention, I couldn't agree more. Scanning the US jobs ads published on the net it's clear the vast majority of US employers are looking for candidates who already have a US work permit. While salaries and career opportunities in the US may be attractive, the difficulty of obtaining a US work visa is a major deterrent not only for the prospective employee from abroad but for the prospective employer as well.

In your "better, more sane business model" what you are effectively saying is that its the developers who need to run the business side of things - so who then, will do the developing?

  6. Its statistical on Questioning The IT Labor Shortage · · Score: 1
Take a random cross-section of the workforce and you will find relatively few quality candidates. Increase the number of candidates and you will also increase the number of quality candidates. Clearly, there is no real shortage - as anyone who has ever applied for an IT job ad will testify. The real problem is the overall lack of quality candidates.

Raising the quota is necessary to bring new talent into the country.

Not exactly, its simply a matter of how many others saw the same quote and also sent in their CVs, then it would be simply a matter of how your CV rated to the others they received.

No one seems to have mentioned what you eat, which I find is indicative of average geek attitude to diet, so many dudes mentioned cofee and pills but no one seems to have mentied good plain old food.

If you are lacking inspiration its probably largely due to a lack of good nutrients - like the vitamin B complexes for example. The brain needs good quality food and a consistent diet, you are getting run down on all that caffeine and coke.

Eat fresh green vegetables, fruits, get plenty of fibre and try some power foods such as fresh calves liver, bean sprouts and crab meat (if you are a veggie or a vegan you probably already paid good attention to it). Add in the exercise and fresh air and you'll soon be back in full swing.

  9. Re:Always in twenty years on Bill Joy On Extinction of Humans · · Score: 1

Yes, the human race would certainly survive, but for how long and in what form? Sure, the dinosaurs survived for many millions of years but I think you would agree that what followed was an improvement. Just as the earth was never the center of the universe, the human species is not the ultimate in nature's evolution.
