In the interim, it's a shame Bell Labs has gone from world leader to nothing... budget cuts, etc. (Lucent)... there was some real research there, and lots of it was shared with the world.

Perhaps there is some cause and effect here. There needs to be a balance where a company can reap enough money from its success that it can continue to support the pure research. Bell Labs was wonderful -- it's too bad they didn't have more business sense and the ability to sufficiently capitalize on their products to stay solvent.

And don't forget, all arabs are terrorists! Don't forget to give them obvious, dirty looks full of awareness of their terroristic descent, when you happen to see one.

There are scientific reasons behind human behavior. Elevated testosterone will tend to elevate violent behavior. Raised in an abusive home raises the likelihood of being an abuser. Raised in a racist home raises the likelihood of violence against other races. Raised with a religion of violence, one is more likely to be violent.

Given enough sample data and enough time, one could construct a system where the likelihood of violent behavior can be predicted. Will the predictions be 100% accurate? Of course not. You certainly couldn't use it to pre-convict someone. However, throwing out the science because you don't like the implications on human nature is as intelligent, as well, intelligent design.

Good job being an unthinking drone

Have you ever studied the life of Mohammad? Have you ever studied the butchery, slavery, rape that he did and condoned? Perhaps "unthinking drone" applies more to those who are ignorant of history.

In case it matters, I voted against W both times. I've never bought into "the enemy of my enemy" concept. The Islamofacists may be redundant, but it is appropriate nomenclature.

Fascists were totalitarians that tried to control how people lived there lives and devalued the individual. Islam -- as taught by Mohammad -- does/did the same. The term "Islamofascist" is rather appropriate when you look at how Mohammad governed.

Having been a consultant to numerous companies, I've always enjoyed watching how they either fire or lay people off.

    Some of my favorite ways:

    • Disable the user's account. Now the sysadm is responsible for telling them when they ask for their password to be reset.
    • During massive layoffs, page the impacted employees one at a time to their manager's office. This way everyone knows who's getting toasted.
    • Have armed guards grab the employee's badge when he attempts to enter the facility, handing him his box of personal possessions from his desk (the facility had over 10,000 employees; the guards were impressive in their vigilance).
    • While working up your nerve to fire the person, say "yes" when they volunteer to pick up pizza so you can continue to work through lunch (and let them know they're fired around your last mouthful of pizza).
    • Have the employee drive you to a customer site so that you can finally meet the customer. Unfortunately, the employee started asking about the layoffs and figure it out before getting to the customer site.

We live in a democratic republic -- therefore if elected officials are not serving the people and allowing laws which directly contravene your wishes, you are under no moral obligation to obey them

I'm not sure where you live, but the U.S. is a constitutional republic.

Even if the U.S. was a "democratic republic" (whatever that is), you would not be free to disregard whatever law "contravene your wishes" - that "form" of government would be call anarchy.
