  3. Terrible article on Mac OS 9 Versus Corel GNU/Linux At CNet · · Score: 1

Let me preface with the fact that I am an advanced Mac and Windows user. I hate Windows with a passion. I am a novice *nix user which will hopefully change once I get over my fear of compilers :) Neither of these two trolls had anything inteligent to say. Focusing a little on the internet section, I belive that both were off base. Both set up very easy out of the box for web browsing. Both set up very will for personal web sharing. Both as web servers can run circles around NT with Apache. I will first to admit that Apple is stupid in the fact that it does not include a telnet client(or FTP, etc....) at all. I can't explain Apple won't try to. But long before the open source movement, the mac has always had a very strong Shareware/Freeware community. I am never without some time of networking software I need. Had the internet in it's present form been around when the mac was introduced, we would probably only have Mac and *nix.

I think that article hit it right on the nose. John Q Public is a stupid f'ing retard. He's the guy who buys a PIII over an Athlon because it's Intel. He is the guy who takes home the free 'puter from Circut City. He sees Ghz Windows machine (read Intel computer) and assumes they must be best. Of course he isn't shelling out for a Ghz machine either he is getting a 500 Mhz Celulose. Very few of these speedy Ghz are availible. IBM has stated that 700Mhz G4 have come off their line, but there are two problems that exist. First the relationship between IBM and Motarola G4 is strained at best. IBM has better production so more chips off the sheet clock up. IBM probably can't sell those 700Mhz CPU's till Motarola catches up. Second reason is that Apple is getting burned, because supply so far exeeds demand. Remember what happend to them when the introduced the 500Mhz G4 they had several hundred thousand pre-orders which they could not fulfill. They arn't going to make that mistake again. They are going to wait until they are ready to sell from now on. Lastly as reported by Mac Addict and their sister publication Maximum PC nearly meets or sometimes exceeds the Athlon and both leave the PIII bloody and twisted on the side of the road.

  7. Re:And let's keep those bibles in Latin, too on Library Of Congress Will Not Digitize Books · · Score: 1

Lets try and get this strait. The church was not preventing people from translating the bible into other languages. First when the printing press was invented and Gutenburg rolled out his first Bible it was fucking expensive. Not only that it would take months to print a single bible even with a printing press. Of course this was much quicker than when monks used to spend a lifetime to illuminate a single bible. Second what was the literacy rate back then. Virtually no one could read and even fewer people could write. The only people that could read or write spoke all spoke Latin. This was not some way to keep people down or to further theocracy it was because it was the only universal language in the globe at the time. It is still used today by the medical community because of it's universal nature. There wasn't even a common English language until the well after the reformation and the counter-reformation. The prayers and bible readings were always in Latin, but sermons and such were delivered in the language of the local people. The Catholic Church spans the entire globe. One of the main focuses of the church is to ensure that the faithful could receive the word of the Lord the world over. I realize that anti-Catholicism is the last of the socially acceptable prejudices but please quit pulling facts from different time periods, different subjects and placing them together to spread your hate of your fellow man.

A-OH-WELL has decided that if they want to compete in the near future they needed to move to "broadband" internet access. Dial-up will be "dead" in a couple of years and they decided to team up with the largest provider of cable Time-Warner. But wait there is also DSL out there. Many people are switching to DSL from Cable(80% of people I know on DSL have come over from Cable). AOL is thinking they might have chosen the wrong side and is now going to use thier large market clout and capital to encourage Cable and stop DSL from spreading. But of course if they alone did this the government would go Anti-trust on their asses so now they are going to use all of these other re-sellers as pupetts.

This is a slippery slope and should not be treated lightly. What is benign to one can be perverse to another. I agree with an earlier comment that states the Lego test is good to test intelligence rather than facts. While I believe using Legos to test intelligence is rater dumb, I do however believe that we need alternative methods of testing.

One easily implemented is to allow SAT2 tests to be used as a measure of admittance. They are designed to test single subjects rather than broad based facts. The student could be required to take sub 100 level classes in other subjects to strengthen their knowledge base. This would prevent otherwise intelligent students from being denied a first rate education because there is something they didn't know. Isn't that why you go to college, because you don't know and you want to know?

Also, why not foster cross development with a Jr. College. Have the student enroll full time in a Jr. college, and allow them to register for limited classes at a University. Many students could prove their academic skill this way, and still receive a good education not normally associated with a Jr. College
