If you look at the Kawa package, which produces Java bytecodes from the scheme language, you find that exactly this problem. Scheme continuations cannot be fully expressed as Java bytecodes, so you can't use them and still produce runnable Java programs. CLR will have the same limitations.

Postscript and Portable Document Format are proprietary but fully open. Adobe is in full control for the format but chooses to be a good citizen when it comes to PDF interoperability. Too bad they aren't as nice to foreign nationals who crack their more secret formats.

  3. Asteroids and ISS on Another Asteroid Close Call · · Score: 0

I am a big fan of the asteroid science being produced by Aracebo and the VLA and am saddened that these programs are being reduced. However, both programs focus on radar imaging of near earth asteroids (and the results have been spectacular too), not discovery. New astroids are almost exclusively identified by visual or IR techniques. So identification of earth crossing asteroids should continue uneffected.

It is a sad fact that basic space science must go begging while we pump untold billions into the space station. The space station is a political experiment, nothing more.

Perl is a useful language for managing text. As such it is an improvement on languages such as awk. But extending its use to OO development, patterns and such is absurd. There are many other languages far more suited to the task. The fact is Perl programming is for bottom-rung, quick and dirty scripting. Making it do much more is a waste of time.

I have experience with both. If you are developing a Java app, or specifically one that employs JSP servlets, EJB, etc. your best choice is Ant. Its builtin rules are very nice. Your project should build routinely on any Unix of M$ Windows. Autoconf should be used for C/C++ builds for Unix where the system libraries and includes must be closely scrutinized.

  11. Right on on Web Services - More Secure or Less? · · Score: -1

Right on brother. Why overload the use of port 80 to placate security administrators? The fundemental principle of IP ports is to provide channels to individual services. A system isn't secure just because a fewer ports are open.

  15. Not a coincidence on Another Plane Down in New York · · Score: -1

This horrible event is not a coincidence. It is the 3rd wave (Anthrax scare being the second) of a well coordinated attack by Al-Qaeda. The similarities to September 11 are obvious. Attack a large airliner, fueled for a long flight, early in the morning, in a densely settled area so as to produce maximum damage. The cause was almost certainly a bomb with a barometric trigger. I hope this quells the silly talk about slowing the attack during Ramadan. We need to smoke these fools in big way.

Prevailing opinion suggests that the Tunguska event was caused by a comet striking the Earth's atmosphere at a low angle. I saw no evidence in the article to suggest otherwise. 23. Kernal already forked on Debate on Linux Virtual Memory Handling · · Score: -1

The Linux kernel is already forked. Linus' and the AC kernal have never been fully synched in even the 2.2 branch let alone the 2.4. We all know AC excels in maintaining the stable branch, but with 2.4 the handoff from Linus to AC has not been clear. AC has eroded Linus' authority. This is not in Linux's long term interests.
