  1. Understanding issues before trying to fix them ? on Michael Smith Leaves Core · · Score: 1

We wish the entire FreeBSD team well and appreciate your efforts and commitment. I think the key issue IMHO may be to try and understand the challenges of the entire FreeBSD structure. i.e. are the issues technical or non-technical ? Specifically what are they and what can be done to help ? Sometimes it helps to redefine roles, revisit responsibilities, priorities and expectations.

I think it must be no easy task for core members to understand and resolve such issues. Maybe some kind of a neutral third party could look at the structure and provide positive input to help facilitate the smooth and focused operation of our entire FreeBSD team/effort ?

Or, maybe it is as simple as reiterating and refreshing the rule book (if one exists ?). This may ensure that everyone is on the same page with regards to roles, responsibilites, priorities and expectations. What do you folks think ?

  2. *BSD needs our help! not our pity :-) on Zero-Copy TCP and UDP Output in NetBSD · · Score: 1

We see a lot of posts indicating that *BSD is dying. OTOH, we see a lot (literally a LOT!) of enthusiastic and excited FreeBSD (*BSD) newbies looking for help with basic *BSD questions.

An important question we all need to ask ourselves: do we want to be plain sideline observers, or do we choose to help grow *BSD? Again, I am sure all of you *BSD geeks will agree that it would be in our best interests to promote *BSD!!!

This is not an infomercial on our part, but a request for all you "expert" *BSD geeks to give back to the *BSD cause by PARTICIPATING, visiting your favorite *BSD sites (or whatever else !!!), and by helping answer newbie questions.

Newbies sometimes feel intimidated/overwhelmed by mailing lists, complex howtos, etc. and dont exactly know where to start. Some prefer asking simple questions in forums, or following simple howtos, etc. It would be in our best interest to encourage these folks and turn them towards FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD!! Encouraging them will promote *BSD committment (committers) with ports/applications, OS and security enhancements. *BSD needs our help!!

  3. Thanks for your efforts! on Jordan Hubbard Resigns from FreeBSD Core · · Score: 1

Jordan: This is a sad day for the FreeBSD community. Nonetheless, thanks for your help, committment, and dedication for the FreeBSD cause. FreeBSD has come a long way, with your help, and is one of the best free, open-source, all around BSD! Good luck and best wishes with all your future endeavors.

Having said that, I personally believe that the responsibility to move forward, in general, lies not just on the FreeBSD core team, FreeBSD committers, contributers but also on the entire FreeBSD user community/base! We need to be a team rather than a consumer since the product is open source. We all need to figure out how we can help it develop as our own asset!

  4. Migrating from Linux to FreeBSD on Migrating from Linux to FreeBSD · · Score: 1

The article has been written with good intentions. As a sys admin/developer, I am personally more concerned about the immediate job, i.e. the issue of migration. It would be helpful to have a precise/specific checklist of things to worry about DURING the migration. Following which, a relative comparison (tabular, fairly specific) would be very helpful.

This is what I am talking about:

    Hopefully this should help others.
