Does anybody have any idea how much traffic is generated by every Microsoft PC having to download patches and service packs? It seems to me that if MS were able to deliver a secure and stable OS (and apps) the global network traffic would significantly drop. Not only in first instance by the patch transfers disappearing, but also in second instance by reducing the number of hijacked systems that are sending me SPAM!
Just my two cents...
Clonezilla (www.clonezilla.org) is an Open Source cloning system with unicasting and multicasting.
It's based on DRBL, Partition Image, ntfsclone, partclone, and udpcast, allows you to do bare metal backup and recovery.
I like that fact that it can save images to just about anywhere (local, NFS, SMB, SSH) and that it supports any filesystem, even yet unsupported ones.
In case some people want to see for themselves the Netcraft stats can be found here and to verify who owns a domain and what the authoritative nameservers are one should use whois.
Is this stuff that matters? Perhaps not for everybody, but some people may be interested. The P2Plawsuits site to settle your case online instead of risking court was moved fast, but I wonder how many people would be willing to enter their credit card info on a site with an invalid SSL cert.
I use SubSonic: a free, web-based media streamer, providing access to your entire music collection wherever you are. This way I don't need to fill up my laptop drive and I can access my collection from anywhere (provided I can SSH to my home firewall to port tunnel access to my SubSonic). It allows me to browse my collection, generate and stream my playlist, or download the songs I want. It also has features for album art and lirycs. There is also Ampache, but I have not used that.
