Overlay crime statistics with camera locations
I've been mapping out locations of government surveillance cameras in Chicago for about a year. I'm hoping to eventually overlay the location of surveillance cameras with Chicago-area crime statistics in order to provide data showing the long-term effectiveness these cameras have in deterring or preventing crime in Chicago.
http://chicagocrime.org/ has been a huge inspiration for this project. Chicagocrime.org obtains it's crime data from the Chicago Citizen ICAM database (http://12.17.79.6/) and overlays that data onto Google Maps, providing a visual representation of exactly when and where crime occurs in Chicago. -
The police already give us this info
The Chicago Police have something called ICAM which maps all of the crimes and the general type but not specifics http://12.17.79.6/ctznicam/ctznicam.asp Also, the site link provided for this guy's site wouldn't work for me. Anybody else having problems with it?

Re:A great idea for the rest of us...
So does Chicago, and they make it available to the citizens. It's called ICAM. So congratulations Adrian, you created something that already existed!

no doubt a cool hack but...
The data source (city of chicago ICAM) already runs a searchable, mappable, filterable crime map:
http://12.17.79.6/ctznicam/ctznicam.asp ...and it's not slashdotted. -
Not at all newWhile this might be neat because it integrates with Google, the concept is not at all new. When I was shopping for condos in Chicago a few years ago, I looked at the Citizen ICAM site (forgive the slashdotting...), which actually has a somewhat better interface for search, in my opinion. It may not look as slick as google, but it does allow you to look over a range of dates, and the map icons identify the type of crime.
It let me see that one prospective condo was right in a corner of fairly low crime, bordered by much higher crime. I could have guessed that visiting the neighborhood, but it was nice to see somewhat empirically.

While not nearly as cool...
The Chicago Police Department already has a web interface, called Citizen ICAM, which displays the same info. I do believe that the new site is compiling its data from ICAM. You can check out ICAM at http://12.17.79.6/

Re:private v. public
For the SSN, there was an article in the latest 2600 about how to live w/o your ssn. Living in Chicago, i have the joy of being in a place where the County accessor's office is online(Where the blues bros ended up at the end of the movie, before jail), so you can see photos, and values of any property in the city. They were driving around in unmarked vans photographing your house!!! Worse than this, the cops have small laptops hooked to a centralized db w/ all available info on you(regardless of if you have commited a crime). So when you get pulled over, they know the color of your house, how much in taxes you pay, and your mother's eye color. ( They demonstrate these so often, it isnt even novel anymore ) But there are benefits, for instance, you can see how bad the crime is in an area before you move there. I believe a balance can be struck, it just requires thought, something that is in short supply.

Some of the data is available to citizens as well
The Chicago Citizen ICAM allows us to see crimes (as REPORTED - without any verification as to the actual occurance of a crime) in our own neighborhoods. It's a very nice little tool, and I hope it can survive a good slashdotting.
