I've said it before. WikiLeaks lost the high ground when they started releasing the diplomatic cables for no other reason than retaliation. They decided to go to war. That Anonymous is supporting them is sad. The only thing I can say is that at least Julian Assange isn't hiding behind anonymity. Gotta give him props for that. I supported Anonymous' when they went after Scientology. But this time they're supporting a would-be journalist, attention whore who I hope gets what he deserves.

Well, after EasyDNS pulled their DNS entry, Amazon stopped hosting them, PayPal, Visa and Mastercard all stopped allowing payments to them, posting more of the content that has been leaked to them is just about the only ammunition they have left to fire with. There are enough people motivate to keep wikileaks going, with 1426 mirrors or the original site in operation at the current time.

Wired stated the following in TFA:

I've seen this word play before. In fact, it was done by Portugal's foreign affairs minister, when discussing the issue of CIA flights passing through portuguese territory to move kidnapped "terrorists" to Guantanamo. He also repeatedly iterated that no one had any proof that these flights existed and that the Portuguese government authorized them. Yet, thanks to the cablegate posts from the US embassy in Lisbon, it has become clear that that very same minister not only knew those flights were passing through Portuguese territory, and some even making stops in Portuguese airports, but he also had an understanding with the US government that, whenever he was asked about them, he would simply iterate that there wasn't any proof they existed. And notice the subtle detail: he never said they never existed, and only claimed that no one could prove they existed. Subtle and important.

This is exactly the same approach Wired is making to this problem. Wired doesn't claim they never did so. Wired doesn't claim they are innocent nor wired's spokesperson tries to dispel the accusation. Wired only claims that no one can prove they did it. But that, as we've seen before, is not the same thing as not making them.

Interestingly, when you Google "wikileaks" right now, Google points you to http://213.251.145.96/ I assume they had to hack that somehow, so kudos to Google. Since a lot of people apparently do a search for wherever they want to go rather than entering the URL, this may have less of an effect than the government would want.

Actually, you can do that yourself with the google webmaster tools. You can add various names for your site (commonly to put a www.domain.com and domain.com entry in) so google can associate links to either, then only ever link to your preferred format. I've not tried it, but it looks like you can do the same thing with an IP address, as long as that IP address will host the right page when you don't specify a hostname in the get request.

Also, DNS is for more than just convenience. We used to have various other systems to find the IP address of a host that we knew was out there (Archie?), and now DNS maps human-recallable names to an address.

Let's say the DNS entry for twitter.com was pulled down. What's the IP address for Twitter? I have no idea. Even if I Google it, the Google entry still points me to "http://twitter.com" We nerds could probably figure out a way around it; find somebody that posted the address somewhere, type it in manually, update our hosts file, etc. But to the vast majority of internet users that might be interested, wikileaks.org has effectively disappeared.

Interestingly, when you Google "wikileaks" right now, Google points you to http://213.251.145.96/ I assume they had to hack that somehow, so kudos to Google. Install rsync -- well, it's probably already installed
Install a webserver of a kind, e.g. lighttpd (that's what I normally use).

If you use lighttpd, just follow these steps:

• create a wikileaks user
• add the public key to /home/wikileaks/.ssh/authorized_keys (get it from http://213.251.145.96/id_rsa.pub )
• mkdir /home/wikileaks/public_html
• enable simple-vhost (sudo lighty-enable-mod simple-vhost)
• edit /etc/conf-enabled/10-simple-vhost.conf :
  • simple-vhost.server-root = "/var/www/servers"
• mkdir /var/www/servers
• /etc/init.d/lighttpd restart
• ln -s /home/wikileaks/public_html /var/www/servers/wikileaks.yourdomain.tld
• Add DNS record. Use a low TTL (eg. 30 mins == 1800 seconds) and change the entry to point at 127.0.0.1 or similar if you get DoS'ed
• Submit information to Wikileaks.

You might want to secure your server more, firewall etc. Check out fail2ban.

While I agree that the rampant calls for assassination are detestable, along with the I have to disagree with the main gist of your post.

Senator Lieberman's actions in particular are abhorrent. He has suggested that he has "spoken with" certain businesses, such as Amazon and that Tableau one which was featured on wikileaks, with an undertone that he would sic the legal dogs on them if they did not do as he wanted. Behavior such as this is disgusting and should be condemned, along with all the other similar behavior where people are ignoring the entire legal system as if it is ineffective and incorrect. People behaving like this undermine the rule of law which is the backbone of American freedom and prosperity.

China, however, behaves quite differently. While there have been plenty of knee-jerk reactions to make WikiLeaks unaccessable in the media, almost none of them have been followed through with, and those that have do not actually make it unreadable, they just make it inconvenient. WikiLeaks has periodically had DNS problems but it is still completely accessible at http://213.251.145.96/ outside of what appears to be a vigilante DDoS. In China, internet traffic which has been deemed by the party as "unharmonious" is essentially completely blocked and even attempting to use those services can lead to jail time. It's also gone on in China since long before WikiLeaks was around, so the US is hardly showing them how to.

You should take note that the people actually in charge who can actually do anything have been relatively quiet about the whole affair, having only gone so far as to condemn the release as making it more difficult for nations to conduct diplomacy. A lot of the racket being made is being done just to make those in power look bad as a way of garnering attention for themselves.

It's interesting that if you go to wikileaks.ch it redirects to http://213.251.145.96/. IOW once in you are using IP addresses and not names. No need for DNS anymore! And nobody should care because you merely click links after that. Brilliant.
