SSH comment needs to be added! This sounds great, I would like to thank the author for the article. Only one thing really should be added. The way that you should do rsync for a back up server is to do rsync over ssh with a passwordless connection. (see http://www.unixadm.net/howto/rsync-ssh.html with google cache)
Also, it should probably also be done from the real server to the backup server so that you can not just break one machine and get into all. (if you break into the real machine as root then you should be able to get into the backup machine)
This allows the backup machine to have only one open port. ssh which can be tcpwrapped to allow connections only from the machines that it backsup.

Debian working on new installer
With all the talk about Debian installer problems in this thread, I'm surprised no one has mentioned that a new Debian installer is coming along. From what I hear, it should rock pretty hard when it's done (no, it's not based on the Progeny installer, and for good reasons).

Re:Exactly WHAT were they using?
I know exactly what I mean by "heterodyne detection." I refer to the capability of a circuit to detect when two transmitters attempt to operate on the same frequency simultaneously. The 1977 Tenerife airport crash of two 747s (KLM & Pan Am) is frequently used as an example of (1) a heterodyne happening (it was recorded on the cockpit tapes), and (2) the need for this feature so all parties are alerted to the event.Geez, you couldn't even type "aviation radio heterodyne" into Google to see what I was talking about. Everything I've posted comes up on the first page!
- Advanced Aviation Technology Ltd. makes a device for this purpose, their sales pitch (section 3) describes the problem. (How nice of them.)
- Salon posted an article about the problem on March 28th. Same example -- Tenerife airport.
Not going to bother bashing lawyers here -- this is Slashdot, feelings on that subject are well known.
"Let me run the numbers for you on interference."
Um... no. Your numbers are way off the mark. Assumptions are dangerous, you have an internet connection, why didn't you use it? Google for "FCC UWB limits" -- the first link is a whole set of info on power levels and spectrum allocation. Digging a bit deeper, you'll find:- "...For now, UWB communications devices will be restricted to intentional operation only
between 3.1 and 10.6 GHz; through-wall imaging and surveillance systems restricted between
1.99 and 10.6 GHz (and used only for law enforcement, fire and rescue, and other designated
organizations) and automotive radars restricted to frequencies above 24.075 GHz."
Further, maximum output -- anywhere in the spectrum -- must be under limits set by part 15 (for now). That's -41.25 dBm/MHz.

Re:XCard Opinion
Plus I had some self encoded TV episodes using DivX 5, and they had a VBR MP3 audio stream, the XCard plays the audio, and the video is completely out of sync (speeding up, slowing down - as though it is using the VBR timings)... and the player crashes after 5 mins.
While all your other points on the card may or may not be valid (I'm not going to dispute them, in other words), I will take a moment to dispute this one. VBR MP3 audio streams in a DivX file is a complete and utter hack. Anyone who knows about the internals of AVI files will recognize this instantly. That it was made to work and play back correctly in Windows is actually due to a bug in the decoder itself, and should Microsoft ever fix this bug, all VBR MP3 audio interleaved in AVI files will suddenly either lose sync or perform exactly as the XCard.

The Grid Report -
Ethanol is an environmental disasterWell, to be more precise the intensity and methods of modern farming is a sword of Damocles above us all. Even if we ignore the erosion of the top soil, the depletion of water levels is set to bring about famine of a scale never before seen. The midwest's Ogallala aquifer is being drained at unsustainable rates, and things are even worse in Arizona and Texas. America isn't alone in this; the whole world is poised to lose it's fresh water resources.
I'm not saying that oil is GOOD, only that Ethanol is not the panacea many make it out to be, and it carries problems as severe as oil. The world needs a much different energy source, but that is a whole 'nother topic.
