Re:get off my lawn
I do remember a kind of linux release, some years back.

Re:KDE and GNOME
How about SGI's 4DWM or CDE?
-
Three words...
MaXX Interactive Desktop.
MID is heavily based upon SGI's Indigo Magic Desktop and IRIX Interactive Desktop environments. I believe the developer may have an agreement with SGI also.

Anyway, since it's probably not GPL you can mod this post down like I know you want to. -
Indigo Magic Desktop for Linux
-
SGI had it first?
I recall Desk Overview long ago in IRIX. There was even an IP dispute over some aspects of this widget with another company (who's name I have forgotten). See here for a note a decade old about how cool this thing was. It had (has) several features that the linux pager lacks. Hopefully, IMD4Linux will give them back to me!

Re:Can we get away from the "Start Button"??
Yeah. I've always found that the Window Maker way - getting the program menu by right-clicking desktop wherever you like - is the best. In fact, I installed LiteStep on Win98 just for that. (I don't care if alternative shells in Windows are only 99.9% convenient - I want my start menu placed where God intended...)
Another thing which I found pretty neat was the Indigo Magic Desktop's "Icon Catalog" application - small groups of icons arranged in a small window, with a tab row on the bottom for categories. Hopefully 5dwm will get along to reimplement it eventually =)

Re:Irix is a good example of a pretty unix boot
Speaking of irix... Check this out. Very pretty irix-like desktop for linux on intel.
BTW Irix does most of it's pretty stuff in prom, which unfortunately makes it almost completely un-customizable. Gets old fast if you reboot a lot (as in, a dozen times a night to test I2 scsi adapters).
