Migratory Birds
Here's another story on migratory birds: http://wwwa.accuweather.com/news-blogs.asp?partne

Re:Who's still denying it these days?Really? Your historical weather data doesn't seem to be clearly biased toward record high temperatures in the immediate past.
I'm not saying that it hasn't been bad recently, but it looks like it's been pretty hot at other times, too.

Re:YesThe idea that the public can't use their own airwaves because a company wants to make money off of it just chaps my hide.
Concur.
But there's hope. We're now able to get all our weather data directly from the NWS office of our choosing, as opposed to having to get it from some bogus subscription service that just regurgitates our own data that we had already bought and paid for, back at us.
Maybe things will shake out alright with wireless?

Re:Cool phishing detection quizThe www4 only shows that it's a subdomain of usbank.com, though. That shouldn't prove anything unless usbank.com leases its subdomains to irresponsible phishers.

I'm in the clear, but I'm too busy to skip sleep over this.

A lot of disinformation from Slashdot on this one
First, Barry Myers is not the president of AccuWeather. Second, this request is not coming from AccuWeather but rather from the CWSA which includes all significant commercial weather companies including the Weather Channel and various broadcast meteorologists. (Barry Myers happens to be head of a committee there). Third, CWSA is not recommending the removal or discontinuation of anything, but rather requesting a review of the policy (read: law) currently in effect but is being ignored by government employees. Rather than offering to review the policy, the NWS has offered only to discontinue the policy entirely, giving them free range to spend your money on whatever they want... if this happens, expect to see (more) plasma screens in NWS offices and more inane projects like the Science Sphere (maybe a good idea if done by some rich kook but not if done with money taken out of my weekly check).

President Barry
I could be wrong, but it seems like someone dropped the ball on this. Barry is not the president of Accuweather. The real president's name is Joel. I know him because he's sent me a scholarship the past two years. If you don't believe me, check the "About Us" section of the Accuweather website. Unless "Barry" is a Nickname for Joel or whatever his middle initial "N" stands for, Joel Myers is the President of Accuweather, not Barry. Maybe Barry is his son?

Memo to Steve Jobs: Hell, MI hasn't frozen over - it's only partly sunny and 41 F.

Re:Probably ground clutter, maybe more than usual.
Hey, slashdot posters: Take TWO extra seconds and make your URLs into links. Really. It's not that hard. Please?
Here's your FAQ from AccuWx. -

Re:This is news?Right, here comes the "not news" refrain again... Well of course there have been similar services available, heard about ditto or altavista ?
Well CreativePro.com didn't work for me either, but fontsearch did.
However the images or fonts returned by those sites are not free, you have to purchase the files. Those 2 sites are really a bunch of crap, for commercial images, use Corbis or Associated Press instead !

Re:Not entirely related...
Btw, does anyone still use VMS in new applications anymore? and what other architectures does it run on?
OpenVMS runs today on the Alpha platform. New applications. Let's see, the Northern Light search engine runs on OpenVMS (not the front-end web servers, but the actual database). The Accuweather website is hosted by a VMS cluster running the OSU DECthreads webserver. Check out the OpenVMS website for more success stories. People think of OpenVMS as being dead, but it still brings in $4 billion in annual revenue for Compaq. The healthcare, semiconductor, and lotto businesses would gring to a halt without OpenVMS.

Why AccuWeather...
It just dawned on me. Unisys and AccuWeather are competing providers of weather data, such as value added weather radar feeds. So my suspicion is that this may be more than just trying to get huge royalties. It may also be to try and cripple a competitor. I didn't see any mention of this in the CNET article, but I think it's important enough to bring up. It may even be relevant and further show why so many patents are really bad tools to put in the hands of business. It could help explain why they wanted so much from AccuWeather.

Re:Not sure I'd be bragging about that...
The U.S. Postal Service? C'mon, couldn't you have gone and picked an organization held in higher regard than the USPS? Like, say, oh I dunno, ValuJet, CyberPromotions, or maybe Juggs Magazine?
:)
Wow.   The Zico!   As much as I've seen your many posts, I finally get to respond to you... ;-)   I bow down in humble admiration.   :-)
Okay... how about Accuweather and Linux (from some article I saw that I'm surprised didn't get posted on /. since it's along the lines of this confusing article about cash registers and Linux).   And don't say it...   "that's why the weather forecasting is so fscked up".   ;-)
Okay, here's one - Burlington Coat Factory.   This example relates directly to the article as this company uses Linux for their POS boxes.
'Nuff said.   ;-)
Cheers,

Cheers to you too... heh heh.
