  4. Poker on Geeks and Poker? · · Score: 1

I don't play poker in any casinos, but have been playing home games regularly for around 3 years now. I mostly play tourney style games which are quite different then cash games. In a cash game with a smaller limit, you'll want to play more conservative. In a tourney no-limit game, it allows you to open up your game and play with more aggression. Poker is one of the games I like to play because you only in part play the cards and the other part you play the players.

Craps, blackjack, roulette, etc. are purely gambling games. It doesn't matter what the other person does because you have a set formula to follow. Once you've learned the basic strategy, these games become inherrently boring. Poker on the other hand is a game in which you have to adapt to the players at your table.

Not only are there plenty of odds to learn, but you'll have to master the art of bluffing and reading the bluffer. And it changes every time someone new sits at the table. Even if you play with the same people, people change, and you have to compensate according to the way they're playing that day.

The best aspect of poker is that its a social game. Hang out, drink a few beers, and have a good time.

  5. Re:What is 35mm equal to? on Sony Shoots For 4-Filter CCD, 8 Megapixel Camera · · Score: 1

No offense, but there's a lot of misinformation in this post. Photo quality prints are prints that look like photos. Highly dependent on subject matter, but a 100 dpi print can look identical to a 300 dpi print. Only the most intricately detailed scenes need 300 dpi.

All digital cameras do NOT have 4:3 ratios. Most DLSR cameras are on the 3:2 ratio, which is good for 4x6 images, but not so for 8x10 images.

To say that a 1DS rivals "only" consumer 400 speed film is a joke. It is true that film typically has better resolution then digital cameras, but film grain at the higher resolutions negate any advantage at those higher resolutions. A commercially printed 16x20 1DS print will rival medium format film. A Canon 10D print can be comparable to the best 35mm films.

Forget all the theory and measurebation that you read. Just examine actual prints and you'll see. You know the digital revolution is coming when even photographic film magazines are starting to give in to the quality of today's digital cameras.

  6. SPOILER! on Review: Matrix: Reloaded · · Score: 3, Interesting

    SPOILER

Unlike almost every other spoiler post here, I don't think I quite buy the Matrix within a Matrix idea. There are 2 main events that hint about the Matrix in a Matrix:

    1. Agent Smith passes himself to the "real" world
    2. Neo stops the Sentinels with a wave of his hand

The Matrix within a Matrix certainly answers those two issues, but my theory is that those two issues are directly related. At the end of Matrix 1, Neo literally merges himself with Smith and kills Smith. In Matrix 2, Smith is the equivalent of a computer virus except that he is free like Neo. So Smith assorbs some of Neo.

Neo in return probably assorbed some of Smith and is able to communicate directly with the machine and hence his abilities to stop the Sentinals. All this is speculation of course, as we really won't know the answer until Matrix 3.

I really liked the Architect scene and how it explained things. The orgy scene definitely didn't belong.

I feel sorry for everyone here. This movie is not that original if you've kept up with Hong Kong cinema. This is a "classic" storyline with choreography that isn't that great compared to some other HK classics. Films like this have been around for 20 years.

What I especially disliked are the western influenced camera angles that press you right up against the action. Thank goodness they only did that for the first half of the movie and the action sequences got far better towards the later parts of the movie.

  9. Blatant Copyright Infringement on Copyrights on Web Interfaces · · Score: 1

If pursued, the ResNet site would stand virtually no chance. There is copyright on all published material, including the graphics and layout and not just the content. Graphics were stolen as well, which gives ResNet absolutely no chance in a legal battle should one occur. A few years ago Taco Cabana sued the pants off of Two Pesos Cafe (I think) and took them out of business just because they looked the same. As long as it is published, it is copyrighted as well. The thin line separating a supposedly copied site is generally very blurry and almost impossible to enforce, but this is extremely blatant. No contest here, folks.

  10. The Real Reason... on On Usage of "Hacker vs. Cracker" · · Score: 1

I was around in the days when a Hacker meant a person that broke into computer systems OR a computer enthusiast. A cracker meant a highly skilled person that broke software copy protection.

Well, the problem is Hacker sounds cooler then Cracker (wtf?), and there's more computer enthusiasts then there are computer 'vandals'. So the computer enthusiasts try to take the term for themselves push the 'real' hackers into the cracker realm. Face it, that's the truth.

  11. I've got an answer, hehehe on Which CGI Language For Which Purpose? · · Score: 1

This being Slashdot aka defender of Linux, it isn't the smartest place to post it, but...

And I'm being serious about this, but for ease of development, simplicity, and ignoring speed and resource usage, Visual Basic actually works pretty damn well for CGI. Ignoring speed and resources? Well yes, most of the stuff I do is actually intranet style applications/employee only apps that don't require speed. And there's a pretty large demand for it on IIS based servers.

VB is pretty good with string manipulation, as it is with database access. It actually runs faster then ASP, but I'm also sure it takes up much more resources as well. When I'm trying to develop a small application that needs CGI, I actually go with VB. With its excellent debugger/environment, I can actually breeze through a semi complex module.

Plus it's compiled so the client doesn't always get the source, so they have to depend on us for updates. I know, Open Source is great, but not when you're trying to make money. =)

I just read the article on ZDNN, and knew that something like that would come up here at Slashdot. Oh man, this is a victory for open source??!?! Just a few days ago tons of people were bashing Microsoft for a very minor security hole. And I mean really bashing Microsoft.

So this "backdoor" comes up, minor also, but it would apppear quite a bit more serious then MS's. And what do we get? That's a victory! We found the bug! That's why open source is king! Jeez people, that's one big way of making open source look bad, and I mean really bad. Is it all just the hype and total biasing?

If we want to bring more respect to the Open Source initiative, then we have to treat these things the same way another OS is treated. If we don't, then it just helps to convince the world that it's just all hype.

You know, there should be a contest. I'd love to stick in a mischievious backdoor and see if people could find it in thousands/millions of lines of code.

Calling it dumb, immature, childish, unethical, or whatever it is is basically unjustified. Sure it is those things, but the beauty in it lies the fact that the original programmer got the world to see it. A good old fashioned joke on the rivalry. Sure it took 4 years to discover, but it got discovered. Hats off to the programmer.

If you're a programmer/developer you know how stressful that job can be at times. It's good to have a little humor. I use to work as a Sys Admin a little while back, and no way in hell is it as stressful as programming. Programmers have frequent deadlines, but as an admin it typically was pretty laid back in a well maintained network. Of course it depends on the job, because I've had a programming job that didn't require anything from me.

And why wasn't that so called encryption key encrypted itself?!? Because no one would ever find it. =)

There are things that work well, and other stuff that ends up useless.

    Useful things:
In-wall light switch, palm-pad remote, the 6-1 remote (thought this would be useless, but it actually has more range then my other remotes)

    Useless things:
Computer interface (nice toy to play with, but thats all), motion sensor (annoying), keychain remote (not their new one)

Wait for their specials where they give out two things plus everything is 12% off. The best thing to get free is the palm pad. The firecracker deal is really nice. Got one to get the extra receiver and palmpad. Nice tryout type of thing. One thing I hate, all their modules and controllers use AAA batteries, and usually 4 for each. Transmitter range is not that great.

There are FAR more viruses on Windows based systems because there are FAR more Windows based users. That's just reality, I'm no microsoft wannabe.

Viruses spread easier on Windows systems because of the added convenience of email with attachments, macro capable documents, etc... I will say that Outlook is FAR more powerful then ANY unix based mail client. But with that power comes the ability to abuse it. There's a tradeoff to everything.

And another thing, people seem to think that viruses can't harm Unix systems because of the permissions on system files. Um, get a real job. System files don't mean crap, its the data that's contained on them that's important. If you lose your system files, big deal, just reinstall them. Data files must be backed up from old copies or in the worst case, months of work are down the drain. The system files aren't important, it's the data. And EVERY user will have permissions to their own data.
