Re:Each Protocol Has Its Good Points
AIM already does support end-to-end SSL encryption. It's a pain in the ass to setup, and both clients must do it, but it works. Take a look at http://www.aimencrypt.com/ They offer generic SSL certificates, but you can always generate your own or even used a signed cerificate. There's no pretty screenshots to show the method, but it's buried in the text.

Re:bah
Aim has encryption, get your own private certificate or use the public one

both ends of the conversation have to have it installed, and during upgrades to aim it often gets lost and you have to reinstall, but hey it's encryption. -
Encryption CluelessnessSo I thought to myself, how do I encrypt my AIM conversations? I was horrified that the first google hit on 'aim encrypt' is this site: http://www.aimencrypt.com/, which goes around giving everybody in the world the same public/private keypair! Apparently, the site's been getting lots of press, including from TechTV.
The dangers of this site have been well explained here, but how many people are going to find it and read enough to understand it? It's just sad that the general population is so completely clueless about the basics of cryptography.

Re:Jabber great because of encryption
Just because you have GPG encryption doesn't mean everyone will use it right!
Just look at the bozos that use AIM Encrypt
Everyone uses the same key pairs!! Hahhahaha. I find this HILARIOUS. Anyone can decrypt anyone else's messages because they all have the same keypairs. And yet, for some reason nobody has stopped them. It's really baffling. I almost wonder if the people who created this publically available key are aiming to compromise encrypted security on AIM, not help it.
It is even better when you send someone something using their bad key with your good key and you're still compromised.
Really, encryption is only as good as the people that use it and 99.99999999999999999999999999% of all users will use it incorrectly. It's a false sense of security if there ever was one. -
Re:Isn't it about time...
and on top of that you can always use AIM Encrypt

Re:Encryption?
Aim has encryption now! Check out AIM Encrypt for a crude (everyone shares the same key) method of AIM encryption. For a more sure method, grab a free key from Thawte and use that instead. It works (I tried it), and will give you a unique keypair. (It gives you a padlock next to your screen name in AIM).
