Well...
The difference here is the fact that it's a Mac, not a PC.
I mean compare the two:
Laptop
Apple Dell
Desktop
Apple Dell
MP3 Player
Apple Dell
Monitor
Apple Dell
The bottom line is, most Macintosh computers are aesthetically pleasing as they are functional. Modern-day works of art, if you will. Most PC's are still plain, square, boxes. At least, for better or for worse, they're not all beige anymore. -

Minor correctionThese are programs which people use every day to get work done. They are available on Mac OS X. They are not available on Linux.
Shake was on your list of programs, but is available on Linux. It just isn't free:Buy Shake 3
Just a minor correction.

Shake 3 is also available for Linux for a suggested retail price of $9,900 (US) with an annual maintenance of $1485 (US). Render-only versions of Shake 3 are free on Mac OS X and are available for Linux for a suggested retail price of $3,900 (US) with an annual maintenance of $585 (US). Task Based Blah Blah
Yes, as demonstrated below Micro$oft's "task based" shit is obviously much better at wasting your time and your screens prescious pixels than Apple could ever hope to.
Here OS News shows how you need a full 1280X1024 window to view a handful of contacts, PLUS another rather large window to actually view one contacts details(note you must actually scroll through this "detail" window to actually see more details than what is shown in the larger, yet still useless window).
While unfortunately you are forced to use Panthers Address Book which only takes up ~590X400px which gives you all the same information as M$ contacts plus more. Not to mention that to actually do a "task" you just fucking DO it instead of start a lame "wizard".
As a double bonus OS X users don't have to view pictures of gay playskool dolls as their contacts portraits. -

How to play using MPlayer and no binary codecs
Download the MPEG4 version, which MPlayer will play just fine - both audio and video. (Change the last "12" and "01" to 12-14 and 01-08 to get them all.)

Re:And for those without a VCR...
Excellent, so simply run:
curl copy me -o universe#1_#2.mov -
Re:xine problem.
Download the videos directly. (Link extracted by downloading the file listed in the page's EMBED tag, running strings, finding the referenced URL, and repeating until I found the real URL.)

Re:Price too high?
Here's a tip for Apple, AltecLansing, and even Microsoft: work on something -- anything -- that can *REDUCE THE GODDAMN SIZE OF POWER ADAPTERS* and, if that's not possible -- work on something that'll reduce the *NEED* for adapters.
OK, I'll bite. First, the iPod can be powered via a tiny wall brick, or via the Firewire cable when connected to your computer. Also, Apple Powerbooks come with an extension cord for their wall bricks that can replace the brick's prongs. The end of the extension cord is a standard two-prong plug, so it can plug into any 110v AC outlet, without taking up any more space horizontally or vertically around the outlet. Also, if U.S. style plugs aren't your thing, you can buy a world travel adapter kit that can replace the prongs on any portable device release by Apple in the last two years.
Now what was the problem again? -

Re:NIS/YP
Of course you can. The Mac OS X authentication architecture , dubbed 'Open Directory' is plug-in based, and since Mac OS X 10.2.6 a nice click-and-play NIS plug comes in standard. For more info : Open Directory

remember G5 users, 10.3 is a 32-bit OS
Mac OS X 10.3 is not a 64-bit operating system. This is particularly frustrating because Apple's marketing machine has very carefully crafted their message to make a reasonable person believe the operating system is 64-bit, especially if you download and read Power Mac G5 Tech Overview (PDF). Apple says about the G5 version of Mac OS X that it runs all of your software -- and runs it faster -- with a version of Mac OS X Jaguar specially tuned for the PowerPC G5 processor, providing a seamless transition to 64-bit power. That's only the beginning of the smoke and mirrors. The 64-bit power only gives users two things: the operating system can address up to 8GB of RAM, though user programs are still limited to 4GB, and some of the G5 numerical hardware is available with a special version of GCC (3.3).

Re:Big mac cluster..
Your Big Mac cluster has 57,600,000,000 calories, since Calories (the Calories food is measured in, as a poster says below) are actually kilocalories.
There are 859,845.227859 calories in a kilowatt-hour.
The PowerMac G5 has a maximum electrical usage of 900 VA in the USA (120V x 7.5A, see this on the second-to-last page). Watts are theoretically equivalent to VA, so that gives us 900W, or 0.9kW. Running these system 24/7 for a year is 7884 kW-h each (24 hours x 365 days x 0.9 kW).
There are 1100 of them. That brings us to 8,672,400 kW-h per year.
Each year, those G5's could use as much as 7,456,921,754,080 calories.
You would have to repeat your 100-Big Mac performance 130 times a year in order to use more energy.
May God have mercy on your bowels. -
Re:Islamic France.
These numbers themselves are probably inaccurate. According to a 2003 poll, the proportion of Catholics is around 62%, 6% of Muslims, and 26% without religion.

Apple's G5 is a 32-bit platform
If your definition of 64-bit is a 32-bit operating system around a 64-bit chip, then the G5 is a 64-bit platform. Mac OS X 10.2.7 (and the upcoming 10.3) is not a 64-bit operating system. The 64-bit power only gives users two things: the operating system can address up to 8GB of RAM, though user programs are still limited to 4GB, and some of the G5 numerical hardware is available with a special version of GCC (3.3). That is very far from what I thought. In fact, we returned the G5 we got last week for a full refund (didn't have to pay the 10% open box fee either), after about 2 hours on the phone. Buyer beware.

I love Ally Hilfiger
Since it's a slow Sunday afternoon, I figure we can all use a picture of a hot, rich chick:
Ally Hilfiger (she's the one on the left, duh). And she's legal, too. OK, a bit toothy, but I think a few hundred million dollars would more than make up for that.
Sorry Ms. Portman, Ally is this geek's new dream. Let the hot grits ensue!! -

Re:Benchmarks with 8GB Ram
From what I read MacOS X doesn't support 64bit addressing yet. There's been discussion (and here)of this on comp.lang.lisp.
Apple's own docs (PDF say:
Mac OS X takes full advantage of the 8GB memory capacity of the Power Mac G5: It can now allocate up to 4GB of memory per process to easily fit memory-intensive applications into RAM.
