Re:The Forgotten Realms.
There's a persistent world for Neverwinter Nights which is trying to recreate the entire of the Forgotten Realms - it's called A Land Far Away (ALFA).

Alternatives ExistEQ/AC/DAoC/etc aren't the only "RPG's" in town. Neverwinter Nights gives people the tools to run games on their own server with a live DM. No, you won't find 5000 people on an NWN server but really, is that necessary?
I'm one of 50 or so DM's in a NWN collaborative world project that spans several computers (come check out A Land Far Away if you're interested). All players are screened and the servers are all 100% roleplay oriented. There are numerous projects out for NWN and many of them offer some great alternatives to the pay-to-play big boys.

Re:D&D Adventures in NWN?
Yes.
I'm afraid I don't know any specific URL's but there's a lot in the works.
Some maniacs are linking together a whole lot of servers to form the major parts of Faerûn. See Alandfaraway.net for more info. Sadly they're not taking player applications right now, so I haven't been able to try it out. Here's the mind-boggling server maps (click on a part of the map to see the server numbers).
Some other guys are implementing the city of Sigil with some planes as well.
And here's a module list on one of the largest fan sites. Most aren't D&D campaigns from "the books" but some might be.
Keep in mind that it's pretty time consuming to do large campaigns, but there *are* groups working on D&D adventures from the books while I type this. -

"Clustered" MMORPG of Neverwinter Nights
Be sure to check out A Land Far Away if you are a hard core role player (in the "acting" sense and not in the "hack and slash" sense). It's a fairly massive online community of about 700 people whose characters will all live within an international cluster of servers.
I got my character in a couple of months ago when I read someone else's post about ALFA here on /. It looks like it ought to be a good time. -
Persistent WorldsThis may not be apparent from the PR and buzz that you've been exposed to, but a lot of us are planning on creating Persistent Worlds using NWN. Of course, NWN servers won't support the huge populations that, ahem, grace such institutions as EverQuest and Asheron's Call. But then, we see that as an advantage: smaller populations make it easier to weed out the munchkins, twinks and d00ds, and thus "make the world safe for real roleplayers."
And at this point, I'd like to plug the project I enjoy being a member of, Neverwinter Nights Online. NWNO is devoted to reproducing the Forgotten Realms' forest nation of Cormyr on a dedicated 24/7/365 NWN server with a T1 link. A lot of other projects plan to use a network of volunteers with DSL and cable to run world "modules" that will be linked via "portals." While we at NWNO applaud and cooperate with all persistent world efforts, the senior DM (and server owner) decided that this approach is subject to too many avenues for abuse, inconsistency, and preferred more control over the platform... and the environment. We hope to retake the definition of Roleplaying from EQ, AC and the other munchkinlands, and restore its original meaning.
