Re:Why stop there?
This is another nice option for burning ISOs.

Re:Good deals for retailers
basic functionality such as burning an ISO to a CD or risk a malware freebe
Bad example. That functionality is built into XP SP2.
Which part? The burning an ISO or malware freebe?
**ducks**
I'll have to re-check my wife's XP machine. I tried to use it to burn a Ubuntu ISO and couldn't find any way to burn an ISO with the provided (by Dell) CD application. I had to hit a shareware site to get an ISO burner. I thought we had SP2 installed, but if it's built in SP2, either I couldn't find it or we don't have SP2.
From a search online I find no refrence to the built in ISO burning application. I did find that it is a toy as an additional downloadable add-in.

In other words.. not included in SP2.
I now use Ubuntu to burn ISO's. -
Re: Windows .ISO burner
For the curious...
Here is a link to the ISO Burner Power Toy for Windows XP. This will allow you to record a CD or DVD .iso image under WinXP without having to go out and purchase a full version of Nero or Roxio. This is a very handy tool.

Burning in windows

m is free and works quite nicely, right click and burn. -
Re:These aren't the big issues at all
"Oh wait... you need to spend $90 on Nero???"
Nonsense, I just drag and drop files in the Explorer to a blank CD and hit "Write Files to CD".
As for ISO's, with ISO Recorder ( http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm , freeware), you CAN just right-click on an ISO and burn it! That's how I burned my Kubuntu CD!!!
Furthermore, Linux requires "extra software" to burn ISO's; the only difference is that many distros include that software by default. -
Re:Example story-with subtitles.
I like the Virtual CD Control Panel (search Google, I got mine from my MSDN Subscription) and the ISO recorder (http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.h
t m) both free as in Beer.
Virtual CD Control Panel lets you mount the ISO images and use them directly. ISO Recorder gives you the Right-Click/Burn to Disk option from Explorer. I almost never use Roxio or Nero.

Re:Seriously: other big Windows software...
Windows XP Pro will let you burn data discs in a drag-and-drop way very similar to Finder. XP Home has that feature removed, but still has the capability to burn discs with other applications.
To burn iso images to a disc you'll need third party burning software like this. -

Re:Yawn
The native CD burning is overrated. Most users need
.iso support and such from Nero (et al) anyway. Also, since XP can do .zip files but not .rar files, XP still needs WinRAR loaded.
On the ISO front there's a free power toy (not written by MS) that allows you to create / record ISOs.
I actually had a Debian ISO I had downloaded onto my XP box and needed to burn. For some reason the *real* CD burning software I had wasn't working. This little power toy let me burn the CD and saved the day.
The CD burning support exposes a bunch of APIs that others can use to accomplish this. I wonder if the ZIP support does the same thing (so that RAR support could be added).
