Cloud Computing is Outsourcing
RMS took his arguments a bit far by singling out consumer apps, but "cloud computing" in general is the most overhyped technology. First off, its not even a new concept, and secondly its really just another spin on outsourcing. Like any form of outsourcing, there are big costs associated with cloud computing, that the pushers tend to glare over. Sure, its great for some poor web 2.0 startup, but its not an option for companies that actually depend on latency and uptime, or happen to truely care about their data.

in other SL newsSecond Life population figures are completely inflated.
From Valleywag.
Now that Linden is publishing actual user numbers, we can see that the Residents figure, as expected, is a big overcount over actual people (about 50% inflation, in fact, accounting for over a million ersatz users). Second Life doesn't have two million users. They have had two million users over the life of the service, and they've lost most of them. Of those users, the majority -- something like 5 out of 6 -- bailed in the first month.

I use to run Gentoo on a Personal ServerI had a colo box that ran gentoo. Then one day, a standard stable package update broke mysql.
* MySQL DATADIR is
/var/lib/mysql * Previous datadir found, it's YOUR job to change * ownership and have care of it * Sorry, plain up/downgrade between different version of MySQL is (still) * un-supported.I vowed never to use Gentoo again, and promptly moved that machine to Debian. I use to run Gentoo on all my desktop machines in the pre-ubuntu days, because it had the most bleeding edge desktop packages and optimizations. After Ubuntu came on the seen, Gentoo had no advantage for me. Its still a great learning too though. I highly recommend for aspiring Linux geeks.

Saw one recently
About a month ago this blue screen appeared on a Windows 2003 Server Appliance Edition NAS BOX. Attempt to mount an NFS share served by the windows NAS, and boom blue screen. This is a commercial NAS box running a supposidly ultra stable version of windows for such devices. I would have picked the linux powered box but it wasn't my choice.

HonestlyI don't even look at ATI anymore when building a system for my own use. Nvidia has had excelent Linux device driver support for a number of years now. The last few personal systems I built were nvidia dualhead systems running linux, and I have never had a driver problem.
My latest system is dualhead dual-dvi pci-express 7800GT system running on Ubuntu. I was expecting the video configuration to be a major pain the ass, but everything worked well.
Until ATI has the same level of Linux support, I will not take their products under consideration.

I Switched recentlyI moved my laptop from gentoo unstable to Ubuntu development for a few reasons. First off, Ubuntu seems to adopt new releases quicker that any other distribution, yet somehow manages to have excellent Q&A even on their unstable releases. The second major reason was that Ubuntu has made an effort to adopt many of the latest mono based applications. If you look around for the most exciting new desktop applications being developed for Linux, most of them are mono based. F-spot, Banshee, and Beagle are in Ubuntu's packaging system.
Thirdly, Community based distros make it so much easier to find support answers. I deal with RHEL systems at work, good luck finding support answers on the web. How sad is it that its the year 2005 and Redhat still doesn't have an online support forum? Ever search for a Redhat support issue on google? Most of results that come are rh9 issues.. Its so much easier to use online resources with community based distributions, when I'm scouring for Redhat answers I find myself asking a simple question, "What the hell are we paying for?"

Pioneer Plasmas Too
On the same note, I recently purchased a Pioneer Plasma TV and found notices for the linux kernel and openssl. Apparently the media box that comes with the display runs on Linux and uses openssl.

mini-itx + freevoAbout a year ago I decided to build a mediapc to play mp3, divx, aac, flac, shn, along with the traditional CD's and DVD's, and mame games. I had a budget of $500.
I ended up building a mini-itx 2ghz athlon nforce2 machine using a coolermaster case that looked just like a stereo component.
For software I deicded to use gentoo and freevo. For input I have a standard remote, a wireless keyboard, and a wireless game controller.
I already have a Tivo so I didn't bother setting up the TV features, but it works great as an all purpose media player.
