This Is Why I Travel Very Light!Folks:
When I travel, I travel very light.
The cell phone stays at home. The laptop stays at home. My custom homemade clothing also stays at home. Anything of value (both hardware and data) is safely locked up at home.
I travel with one shoulder bag containing the absolute minimum clothing/toiletries that has less than $100 value.
My wallet stays in my pants pocket or on my bedside table when I am asleep. I double check everything (wallet in pocket, nothing left behind) when I leave the room.
I might as well leave the darn door open when I leave as I just don't care of the meager contents therein.
Hotel safes are also vulnerable as well as the rooms.

Transform Slipcover to Clear Raincoat

Re:Television is a prison for your mind.May I please disagree.
I have been without TV for 34 years and I have have an extremely fulfilling life.
I have these wonderful hobbies that give me more entertainment. I happen to a a light artist and I really love it.
If you want to see some of the things that I make during the time I could have watched TV, go to http://www.allyn.com/
If you are in Portland, Oregon, and you see someone with jewelry and clothing that glows in the dark, that's me.

Re:Are movies worth it?
So, I take the money I save by not subscribing to movies and tv and engage in hobbies that keep me engaged and creative, such as these at http://www.allyn.com/
Wow, your website and pictures scared me, but I could not look away.
-
Are movies worth it?I have not been to a first run movie theatre for about 3 1/2 to 4 years; I've lost count.
I find plenty to do without going to first run movies or event renting movies.
To be brutally frank with you, much of what comes out of 'the industry' these days have very little to keep me engaged.

Re:Get off the couch, folks.I have a cell phone that is about 6 years old.
I use it about 5 minutes per month.
I commute by bicycle about 6 miles minimum each way to and from work. Sometimes 10 to 15, depending how I feel.
I get around everywhere by bicycle and walking
I eat raw vegan about 60 percent of the time; the rest is vegitarian.
I take no high fructose corn syrup. That stuff is poison.
If I am not out exercising, I am engaged in my hobbies of sewing, welding, glass engraving, and lapidary. I make stuff for the fun of it. If you want to see what I make, go to www.allyn.com for my art journal.
I have not had a couch or tv for about 30 something years.

Perhaps an increase in pay???My commute is spent on my bicycle. Exercising.
My commute (10 miles each way) is my 'gym class'. If I did not have that, I would have to join a gym and pay $$$ to wait in line to use the machines which are not properly wiped off by the previous user.
On the days that I do telecommute (because of a package delivery, doctors appointment etc), I find myself not as energetic as those days that I do the bicycle commute into the office.
I am single; no children. Therefore I cannot comment about day care. I don't know how much it costs.
I do have hobbies at home. They can be distracting. I sew, weld, and do light art. Those can be quite distracting from work.

Re:Not GoodThat's why I got rid of my TV back in 1978. They pulled the same trick then.
Now I have fun making things.
I look at google news for a few minutes and shut it off and had for the sewing/welding/workbench.

Re:Nothing Beats Stupid CriminalsThank you for reminding me;
I need to get that motion activated security camera for my jewelry so that when people like this steal it, the police can make a solid identification.

My home-made clothing lasts longer than computersI make my own clothing here/ has lasted longer than some of these computers and phones.
I have at least two or three shirts that I made about 15 years ago. They have outlasted much stuff that I bought.
I have talked with someone who has one of the first clear raincoats that I made about 10 years ago. He uses it very heavily and it still looks like new.
I have a home made tote bag that I use *very* heavily (inluding carrying my laptop to and from work on my bike) and it shows no sign of wear.

Re:"Everybody wins" mentality
It can also go the other way. Once upon a time, I made an oscilloscope for my junior high school science fair project. I did not get any prizes. An electronics engineer came to me later and told me privately that my project was so well built that the judges did not believe I was the one who built it. Furthermore, even now, when I wear these in public, some people don't believe me when I tell them that I have made them.

Master Key to North Station in Boston
When I was a kid, I was able to figure out the locks at North Station in Boston. For those of who who don't know, North Station is the other major train station in Boston.
Back in the 60's, when the world was a little bit more innocent, I was able to fit a master key to all of the locks in North Station, which was also Boston Garden (the arena for the Boston Celtics and the Boston Bruins).
I never used the key; in fact I threw it away once I made it. It was only a proof in concept.
The only thins I make are my wearable art (http://www.allyn.com/ and http://www.clearplastic.com/)
Locksmithing is no longer fun with all of the security paranoia. I buy my own locks to play with. The only fun thing I do in North Station anymore is to prance around in a leather juck strap and a clear plastic raincoat.
