Re:This is sad.
well don't forget about commercials....if we can record it we can skip commercials...set our TVs to start recording then start watching everything 15 minutes later (ala tivo) since a major part of the industry is commercials they want it

Triangleman
I play quake3arena as triangleman so this question is important to me. All through the song particle man, triangle man beats people up. But when you talk about universe man he doens't try...did he just not try yet and could we assume he could beat universe man if such an epic battle arose or no?

hehe weird grammer
I woulda had a full half point better on my high school GPA
full half point huh? 100% of 50%? why not "almost all of half of the portion equaling approximately 90% of the whole of the whatever it is we're talking about?" time for some caffeine

Re:simple graphics techie questions
This is OT I know but I have to respond.
If the framerates are less that doesn't effect the speed of the game. This is because the game is framerate independant. They do this by calculating everything according to realtime. Lets say you have a car moving at 3 game units per second. To find the cars position you take the last position and using the velocity and time since the last calculation you can calculate the new position. This has its own problems if the framerate is too low or high. It is the same thing as aliasing. If you take few samples then the resulting model (projectile path, object movement etc.) will be inacurate. Example: if you throw a ball up and sample it 3 times in midair the maximum height achieved probably won't be one of the samples so in a game you wouldn't be able to jump as high. I hope this answered your question...wish I was better at explaining things sorry.

Re:Probably the best method
One problem with your key being stored on a removable media is the box that reads it and encrypts the contract with your private key. You must completely trust that box. Perhaps a better method would be removable media with a small processor. Your D-signature card would read in the contract and output the encrypted version. The card could be completely self contained. No batteries necessary because it could use power from the reader.

Unusual software convention
Usually when there are people out there (such as myself) who chose your software because of the features your software had (in this case strafe jumping, shooting through thin floors) you wouldn't take these features out in a future upgrade that will be required to use your product. (new servers wont accept 117 clients) Now the strafe jumping and shooting through thin floors aren't the only reason I chose the game over all the others....they are just a part of the unique feel that the game has...and they are an important part. I believe Id has really alienated a lot of gamers here and I wouldn't be surprised if they (myself included) abandoned their game for a different game that they seem to want to be identical too (read: unreal tournament) I'm very dissappointed with Id.

demonstration
I've always thought of gnutella as more of a demonstration than a finished product. While it may not be the best implimentation it shows that distributed file sharing can work well with no central server...its an important step...this version of gnutella may have reached its limit...but there will be more...just some thoughts

Re:Just as I expected from Slashdot
Well, what if I told you that two years ago 3dfx sued NVidia over a patent the held on multitexturing?
Yes, and when they did that I boo-ed them too. I look down on all anti-competetive practices. Its always dissappointing to see a company that thinks it can get ahead by cheap tactics. We shouldn't say "well turn about is fair play" we should decide exactly what is fair play and make the companies follow those rules.
I currently own a Voodoo3 and a GeForce 256 SDR. I am pleased with both products but not with both companies. I think I'll buy a Radeon AIW =)

On woodland animals and censorship in general...oooh... nice beaver!
my opinion: censorship is a total crock, whether or not it's accurate. the fact that it is embarrasingly inaccurate only makes it more obvious.
i wonder if BAIR would block apartment6.org? it has lots of skin tone.

Some questions
sorry for my ignorance but I have a few questions and
/. is a good place to get answers =)
Isn't Divx not a real standard format? or is it? if it isn't then we're happy about support for a non-standard format? Isn't Mpeg4 not officially released yet? Don't get me wrong Divx is awesome (never thought I'd say that hehe) and I'm very happy to see it go to Linux. Although they do have the codec functioning now on linux (thats good) hmmm well I would really appreciate some answers =) thanks

Not a bad idea
Since this isn't a bad idea I think I'll start such a place myself. Now everyone submit a whole bunch of great ideas to me. Then we can discuss them and stuff.
note that by submitting your ideas to me you relinquish all rights to them patent, trademark or otherwise...also by submitting them you agree to not disclose any part of the screwin^H^H^H^H^H^H^H discussion process to anyone

advertising?
how are they gonna work the advertising? as a corporate sponsored thing you'd think they'd try to get more than just airtime and whatnot for it...more than casual name mention and recognition...I'm thinking a big radio shack symbol on the sides of the boosters (just like their batteries)...that way when models of them are made they have the logo on them...free advertising later...models will be built they always are...and the paint on the outside wouldn't have to survive anything (launch is where all the pictures tv cameras will be taken and they always make the model look like the launch model...hmmmm

Re:mp4 support!
Considering the mp4 project is intially based on midi support, this might make mp4 support on the palms REALLY simple! 1000x compression, here we come!
isn't it mpeg 4 and not mp4? mp4 would be mpeg1 layer 4 wouldn't it? just curious

change the damn business model
For the last time (ok so you'll probably hear this many many more times) the reason why all of this is happening is that the business model needs to be changed. Our money (music buyers) is being misdirected. I don't want to steal from the mucisians. My father has been a musician all of his life and if someone stole his songs I would be furious. The people who benefit from CD sales are the record companies. Most of the artists revenue comes from touring. I want to see the artist get more of a cut from the CD sales. I want to see reduced CD prices. With a good online service for providing MP3s that provides enough income to support the tours artists would make as much if not more than they already do. Record companies can bite my ass.

can you blame them?
With all of the talk of the US government wanting backdoors built in to all encryption so that they can protect the good ol' states can you really blame them? The power to access what should be confidential information should never fall into the hands of the government..t.here is no garauntee that it would not be used for purposes other than what it was intended...not to mention that if one of our agencies can get in then no doubt some youngster will find a way... if they open it they don't have to buy it from us as the article said...I agree

wow better be good.
they are charging $15 for a softcover 400 page novel....online...thats a little steep...didn't check shipping yet...although I suppose it is a new release but still...I complain but I'll probably still buy it hehe =)

Hehe /. effect rocksfrom their site
Many of you have emailed me asking about the downloads being inaccessable. I spoke with the GameStats sytem administrator and he said he turned them off because the traffic from Slashdot.org was killing the network. They will be turned back on at a later date.
hehe I love hearing about how we as /.ers do this kinda stuff...kinda makes me proud that we can make a difference...sort of

Re:Highly competitive industry
Practically every part of the industry is competetive. Not just graphics accelerators. Look at the Intel vs. AMD wars, Aureal vs. Creative (well ok so that ones over) the OS wars currently going on. In an industry that moves so fast only the most competetive will be able to keep up. And nothing lasts forever.

why?
Why would I want to stop those informative e-mails? Just yesterday I was informed that I may have already won a free cruise. And another message (which assured me it was not a pyramid scheme by the way) made me aware of the fact that I could easily make $50000 a month IN MY OWN HOME! I have also been made aware of the fact that there are lots of hot teenage women who would love to be with me. I mean honestly...this so called spam is the only hope I had left. I thought I was a luckless geek making $8.00 an hour who hates his job and can't wait to graduate from college just to get a boring also underpaying job and I would probably never get to go on a cruise. Just some thoughts.
My Home: Apartment6 -
Why?
Why are you doing this? I can only see two reasons.
1. You have just offended 300,000+ fans. Since you are a business (tell me you're not in it for the money) you must think that the revenue from the CD sales you'll get from your mp3s not being online will be higher than the lost revenue from the offended fans.
2. You are just puppets. A weapon wielded by the big boys in an effort to squash the users of napster.
I suspect the latter. #2 is more likely because the amount of money you would make from the extra sales probably would not be greater than the lost revenue. You are a big name band. You have a big enough name to scare universities away from napster and even some kids. The "Big Boys" can afford to lose some money from this incident because the extra money generated from all of their signed bands is almost assuredly more than the money you will lose from the alienated fans.
All I have to say is so much for being a rebel band.

hmmm why no one else has thought of this
I wonder why no-one has patented beige rectangular boxes...I mean thats IP isn't it? According to Apple it seems to be. Do they not have anything else except the appearance of their box to rely on for sales? Does gateway sell their systems only because of the neat-o cow box (I'd never buy one but still). Honestly to hear their engineering people talk (and a lot of other people inculding me sometimes) you'd think their processors and hardware in general is actually better. I have just been informed that people who are looking for pretty colors are the target of Apples new products. They should start selling paintings if this IP is so important. If they want to keep their stuff closed off from everyone else thats their business but this is ridiculous. just my $0.015 (not quite 2 cents)

This is stupid
We don't spend ridiculous amounts of money on faster processors and graphics accelerators just to have our fast connection take the benefits of these away from us. So for the high-end or just gamer group this is a bad idea. Look at the lower-end "just a guy trying to download stuff". Whats he gonna download? If its streaming video or anything that requires a decent processor (in other words the "good stuff" hehe) then he's screwed. People who would just download large files like a linux installation and BeOS are out of luck because getting drivers for these OSes is going to be a joke. So tell me who is this supposed to appeal to? Stupid people? I'm sorry but I just don't see the point. If you're going to spend more money for the faster processor (550+?!?) why not spend more money so you can get some good use out of it? Just me 1.5 cents.

Re:Interleving memory banks
Yes, supermicro sells a motherboard that is a quad xeon server board with quad interleaved memory channels, onboard SCSI-160, Ethernet 10/100, and 64bit pci 66MHz =) good stuff. I want one. (rather have an Athlon solution but I just can't have that right now can I?

Great Idea
Wow, this is a great idea! Ironic hypocritic bastards! How can they not realise that actions like these will cause even more problems? Instead of actually thinking about what causes the problems they just charge right in. These proposed actions have an uncanny similarity to witchhunts. Everyone will be too busy pointing fingers and being paranoid of that kid in the corner who doesn't talk to notice the real trouble signs. Instead of teaching kids the right way to do things we isolate them, making them feel even more alienated. This is one of the few things I agree with Katz on.
