ALSA rules!I have a Sound Blaster Live! Value with Klipsch ProMedia speakers (they rule, www.klipsch.com), and I tried the drivers from opensource.creative.com and they were cool, but then when I tried ALSA drivers, the install scripts (buildrpm scripts for redhat/mandrake/rpm-bitch-distros) were VERY easy to use, and ALSA drivers put out WAY better sound and bass with my music, so I'm pumped. It also has many things on its page, such as new mixers and programs that it works well with.
only problems i'm having are from not being able to compile c++ executables (i've tried everything..) and i can't set up an alsamixer to make my rear speakers louder. Also, the xmms alsa plugin doesn't work for me (xmms segfaults), and without it, there's a bit of static at the beginning of each song. But it still sounds way better..
Go alsa/SuSE!

Question from someone not so good at this..Sometime around last year, the field was very excited and happy because a planet was found where there was actually definitive evidence that it existed. It was something about the light or certain waves bouncing off of it during an eclipse. Could someone explain that a bit better? And how it was different from catching other new planets, which is done by sensing gravitational pulls??? I don't know, i'm clueless.
please enlighten me

Intel's REAL Roadmap
Get our asses beat by AMD time and time again
Allow Transmeta to take over the mobile market
Pump billions of dollars into technology that we will never get to work
Keep talking about Merced or any 64-bit processor but never do anything with it
Sue/Get Sued by anyone with a heartbeat (also Microsoft! not sure if they have a heartbeat..)
Fake profit earnings after getting killed by AMD/Transmeta/Cyrix
Make a "KILLER" motherboard with modem/sound/video built-in!
Sabotage future Celeron-type chips from being overclocked or SMP'd
Make more bogus roadmaps

Scott - thanks a lot for your words. I run the AbuseDesk for the ISP i work for... when we get spam from AOL servers, should it be forwarded to abuse@aol.net ? That's where I send mine, and although I never get a response, I read that it is the right place.

Enlightenment developers
What is your relationship with the Enlightenment developers?
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) - AOL IM: MicroBerto -
artificial religion
If computers became independent and gained self-knowledge, I wonder what they would do about religion/spiritual things. Would they succumb to the pressures of our modern day religions? Would they create their own? Would they worship humans, seeing that we created their first ones? I think its an interesting thought...

My favorite option
I'm not much of a cell phone expert, but one option which I love and is worth its weight in gold if used, is free weekends! It encourages use, and is great for sharing and not worrying about someone running up a tab when you're on the weekend.

rebellion
the main similarity that I see is rebellion. I know many linux users who do just in rebellion to Microsoft/closed source/satan/whatever. Rap and hip-hop music is obviously very rebellious as well, and that doesn't need to be argued. Hip-hop is a quick, jumpy powerful music, just like the bleeding-edge, quick, and powerful linux. Very cool!

Re:Keep bringin the goodness
Ok, you might have me there, but this is proof that the open source model will dominate, at least. Seeing that linux runs under open source model, linux will dominate and take best advantage of it.

Re:A half a million questions
There's a way more powerful and
.. efficient API. I think efficient would be the best way to put it, because from what I know, the libraries are way cleaner and do not produce crap that you'd get from something like some x86 libraries out there. These puppies can also take things like recursion and clean it up better than anything else as well.

Embedded LinuxAs these companies need low-cost solutions for the hardware in each of their netappliances, they are oging to need a chip with embedded linux! This goes along well with the company named Atmel that we had an article on earlier. They're expecting this market to multiply 150x. I bought my stock

Re:The ultimate piracy -- radio
Good grief! How are they supposed to be making money on CDs when people are playing this music for free on the radio!?
Funny, but not true.
Let's say you walk into a clothing store. Let's say they have the radio on. How many times do you think someone was charged for that?
Three times.
- The company that presses the CD has to pay the publisher of the music (ASCAP or BMI). This cost is passed on to the store that sells the CD, and eventually to the consumer who bought it, in this case the radio station.
- The radio station has to pay ASCAP/BMI again, because the playing of the CD is considered a performance.
- And the store that just happens to have the radio on has to pay yet a third time, because the act of turning on the radio within earshot of customers is also considered a performance.
In theory, ASCAP/BMI pass this money on to the record label and thence the artist. In practice, only the top-grossing fraction of a percent of any artists ever see any of this money. Almost all artists never see a dime from this racket.
Here's a great article on this topic: ASCAP and BMI: Protectors of Artists or Shadowy Thieves?
(And I can't pass up an opportunity to link to this one again: Some of your friends are probably already this fucked. )

suck.com lays the smack down
This is from the suck.com article.:
But the people who truly deserve the blame for the public's hours-long inability to swap "Steam Engine" jackknives on eBay are the short-sighted, tight-fisted monkeys who managed to build a multi-billion dollar industry on an insecure networking system, something so fragile that it can be brought to its knees by anyone willing to bother. The fact that a target as big and fat as Yahoo is fundamentally vulnerable to something as simple as a DoS attack is a clear invitation to go right ahead and shut them down.
Whoa, that's pretty intense there. They also go on to say that since vandalism is inevitable, its up to the people who will be vandalized to protect themselves. I agree to a good extent.
My question is this: How can you properly protect against many DOS attacks? Once so many requests come in from one IP, you block that IP? I can see problems there, such as if many customers through one ISP go through a cachebox. The way I see it, stopping this is just as hard as stopping the slashdot effect. What types of protections are there concering router-level protection?
thanks..
PS - I know that packets coming from our ISP cannot be spoofed due to our routers, so if my box (soul.apk.net) caught wind of the problem, nothing would be allowed out anyway. However, I don't think it's always our job to do the security for outgoing traffic.

Re:Very scary
Of course, all of these artists are definitiveely part of the "music establishment", and all were developed by money from the major music corporations. They are all among the best selling artists OF ALL TIME, and the major music corporations have gotten very rich from them and these artists have gotten very rich with the help of the corporations.
Have these artists gotten rich? Maybe they have, but I'm asking because I don't know, and it's certainly not a given.
What I'd like to see are some stats on how much money the various mega-stars have actually come away from the deal with. As anyone who watches ``Behind the Music'' knows, the artists often end up broke, and it's often for reasons other than ``they spent it all.''
My favorite anti-music-industry rant: `` Some of your friends are probably already this fucked'' by Steve Albini.

Re:One to many
Did you know that of the $15 or $16 you spend on a CD in most CD stores, about $1 of that actually goes to the artist?
It is so much worse than you imagine. Read this: http://www.apk.net/cihs/verbal/albini.html
The summary from that article:
- This is how much each player got paid at the end of the game.
Record company: $710,000
Producer: $90,000
Manager: $51,000
Studio: $52,000
Previous label: $50,000
Agent: $7,5000
Lawyer: $12,000
Band member net income each: $4,031.25The band is not 1/4 of the way through its contract, has made the music industry more than 3 million dollars richer, but is in the hole $14,000 on royalties. The band members have each earned about 1/3 as much as they would working at a 7-11, but they got to ride in a tour bus for a month.
Burn, Hollywood, Burn.
