Re:Great link!heh, i like you
:)In the perfect world, gun control is GREAT. However, we are far from that notion. The people like these "Fucking British fucks" tend to forget about the black market. Now guns come only to those with connections. And there's a better chance that if they rob you, you don't HAVE what THEY have! So they're more likely to take advantage of that situation.
Game, set, match. UK Loses once again.

Re:Interesting side effects?
And beyond that, has anyone's animals been acting weird lately? This is serious... my dog has been howling a lot, and goes outside to the bathroom a lot more! And then the fish are acting crazy too... don't know what's going on in this house.. maybe this is why

KISS
100 megs my ass! I don't need all those bells and whistles, I'm just going to use my good ol' AbiSuite (www.abisource.com)... they're due for a new version soon, many cool things being added!
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) - AOL IM: MicroBerto -
This is good, real good...This guy knows his stuff well, and from what i'm reading, i'm saying "easier said than done!"
He has many steps, taken here:
Firewall that's logging stuff and can give reports/alerts.
Logging local stuff on a remote server so that if the honeypot's logs are destroyed, they're still really around..
Then run a sniffer, capturing, like the first 300 bytes of each packet, checking for evil words (kinda like the USA CIA captures certain words if you're on the phone with someone... there's like a list of 500 no-no words on the phone).
Then he runs tripwire to see if any binaries have been changed.
When a cracker gets root, he monitors it and sees what he does. This is VERY important, becuase you must know your enemy, and then for future reference, secure anything that he would want to touch.
And then he's like "that's it", and brushes it off his shoulder. Were I to do much of this, I'd have lots of learning to do!

Re:Wow...Another [nowadays] popular band like this is Rage Against The Machine. I am a big fan of their music, and have my discrepancies with much of their politics, but I love their overall message. They work well with Chuck D and support him a lot, and have this same mentality.
Rage's stances against censorship and oppression (especially from big companies) fit right into many of the slashdot community's themes. They're also GREAT in concert (i have bootlegs!)
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) - AOL IM: MicroBerto -
As I was saying about music...Chuck D has plenty of money. He should want people to infect the world with his music for free or extremely cheap. In reality, he has nothing to lose, but he can sure gain many new fans, supporters, press, etc.
As Chuck D gives his props to Napster, Berto gives his props to Chuck D. I'm not a fan (metalhead here..) but I LOVE what's going on!

Re:GPL and Music
Yup, if i was in a talented band, I'd want my music to be free, or extremely cheap. And steal it too. I'd have no problem with infecting the world with my music! You can get donations from cool people and then make money doing shows if you get some publicity, if need be. Free concerts are also awesome too, but you have to make money somewhere if it's the only thing you do.

Re:Too easy, but sorta fun.How about if we have a collective slashdotting of netbenefits servers??? Someone (Jon Katz) could organize it, and say at a certain time, everyone goes to a list of websites.

Seeing that RPM has not been mentioned anywhere on this page, does anyone have a linky linky with some i386 or mandrake RPMs? Thanks!

LAWYER - Re:Read closer - this is not a victory...Being a lawyer, i must disagree:
Although there are still a few more proceedings to go through, this is good.
First off, its a step in the right direction. Open source wins once again.
Second off, although the court hearing was done within the barriers of the constitution, the opposing sides of case have been known to dissent in as well.
Third and firstmost, you are correct about the TOOL part, yet incorrect about compiling and using.
Fourth and thirdmost, the reason that you're incorrect about the compilation and using is because it will be legal to execute the written code if it is a legal amount of code in the firstplace, meaning that it does not make its writer liable for anything, or cause a national security, or harm anyone in a significant/reasonable way.
Fifth, this goes along well with the possibility of having Microsoft having to release some of its source code. Now the courts can have a writ of mandamis that it be handed over now that the actuall open source IS legal. Before this, all of that banter would have been ILLEGAL!
Sixth, my fifth reason leads me into my next part: Open source dominates because there is nothing more to hand over. DRI may be a problem, however.
Seventh, you can't triple stamp a double stamp, like in "Dumb and Dumber"

Back up the Bus!Whoa now, i was just thinkin of some bad implications when i posted my last post. Say I write an open source first person shooter game where you are a mercenary running around shootin people up.
Now imagine that Signal11 writes an add-on mod and level that takes on the white house, and is a well-diagramed display, and one of the enemies you must kill is the President. This is an expression that is a threat to national security, and Signal11 could get in a LOT of trouble. There are things where this could be a bigtime limit of freedom as well, because freedom of speech/expression only goes so far.......
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) - AOL IM: MicroBerto -
Re:attn thought police: free speech inside
#include what? Looks like your didn't work!
:)
although funny, you better not have any death threats to the president though, you can still be found liable for whatever you have in your code.

Re:Term has worked well..Jon - please do not restrict your domain in this battle. Although you are first and foremost representing the "geeks" of slashdot, you should make this a UNIVERSAL argument for *everyone* that can be victimized by such an organization. Not only would it make you sound less selfish, but it is more wholesome, gives you more heart, and reminds everyone that there are more than one type of people being affected, and definitely more than one type of person in this world!
There are several kinds of people out there that need more help, I think many geeks are the least affected by this, personally. So don't restrict yourself or it'll be as if you're breathing through a straw.

Re:A Victory that isn't really worth much....
Cisco? nahhh... they're at the top for a reason, and it isn't due to unfair business, unlike a true evil monopoly. There is competition with Cisco in almost all products, it's just that Cisco rules. The only people that really want Cisco to go down are its competitors, becuase Cisco is REALLY good at what it does. Argue all day, but Cisco has earned their top, and the prices are not out of control.

No insight shown...Yippee, yet another article that says "cool... umm yeah! We'll just have to see what happens, the rules are changin.." blah blah blah! No different from anything else, just explaining the situation, tying in a few bad analogies, and throwing an advertisement on the bottom.
I sometimes question the quality of online journalism... seems that some of them like nandotimes could be dime-a-dozen.

Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) - AOL IM: MicroBerto -
What do you think? There are two ways to look at this: Something will happen from this, or something won't (duh)..
Now what i think is that either life will go on as usual, MS will pay a fine, and people will continue to buy and support their software; or this will begin a ball rolling downhill of lawsuits and dissent, both internal and sales-related. I personally HOPE for the latter idea, but in all reality, I personally don't think anything is going to really happen.

Re:I agree
Hmm... as i read that, I kinda see what you're saying, but I had an argument with myself. Although doing that would seem like kiddie-shit, it could be a good way to get a point across to them that their proprietary crap will get them into trouble. On the other hand, if you're a good coder, it'd be more useful to go and do something GOOD with your skills, like take a look at xchat or BitchX or fix my c++ compiling
:)

Re:Competition
I thought that the problem wasn't about the software, but it was about the network "problems".. I love GAIM! www.marko.net/gaim/
GAIM has some new versions lately, Mark has picked it up and is updating many things, its becoming impressive. Proprietary IRC clients, OTOH.... that's another story.

Re:Another advertising sccheme..
Actually, I think that idea of long distance with ads was really kicked around. i think it's a GREAT idea - if people are willing to listen to ads to get free long distance, all the power too everyone! I personally woulnd't do it (i'd rather do some online long distance), but if you don't like the advertising at all, then don't go there. Don't do the long distance, don't use talk city, etc... no one is putting a gun to your back.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) - AOL IM: MicroBerto -
Re:how easy can it beyes, but i think that you're missing the point in that they're closing people out. This is not to the best advantage of a company. I don't go where I'm unwanted (except slashdot! haha)..
Furthermore, if everyone is using the same 2 or 3 closed-source clients, what if there is a security bug found in one of them? EVERYONE is vulnerable. Competition is good, proprietary is bad. Talkcity will see.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) - AOL IM: MicroBerto -
I love it when...
it makes me laugh when companies shoot themselves in the foot like this. not only is it about supporting all of the operating systems, but I think that you lose a lot of "flavors" of people when you do this as well, and when some leave, it could carry an even greater migration along with it. Not a wise idea to shut anyone out, unless you want to be a loser.
