HP49G+ is Coming!!!
Just had a glance at HPcalc.org, and noticed that specifications for a new calculator, the HP49G+ are up. There's been talk that HP is releasing a new super calc, and this seems to be it.
It has a 75mhz ARM processor, SD card storage, IRDA, an improved keyboard and screen and several other HP features, such as RPN
Naturally, these specs are not set in stone, but it seems legit (check out This PDF file!) This calculator seems to be the TI-killer that HP supporters have been waiting for. -

Re:And the reason..?
Some more choice quotes...
"...But what I really can't stand is when tech people run around and say "never, ever respond to spam, or try to opt out. You will only get more once they realize your email address is good." This is just BS..."
Really? What evidence do you offer in support of this claim? I've tried, as an experiment, using the 'unsubscribe' link or address in a couple of spams. The result was predictable; Lots more spam, from an even wider array of sources. It got bad enough that I had to close down the 'bait' address I used.
There's plenty of at least anecdotal evidence, such as that found here, that I think is more than adequate to counter such a sweeping generalization. I'm sure a Google search could turn up lots of other examples.
This also caught my eye...
"It can be confusing to explain the best way to remove spam - learning to decipher legitmate companies (Buy.com, Hickory Farms, Citi Bank) from the viagra ads, but you have to try. The legit ones will truly remove you when asked - so that's done..."
'Legit' companies won't send you marketing E-mail without you asking for it to begin with. That's what confirmed opt-in is all about.

Re:"angry ex-customers"
But here actually is an EULA with a morality clause! The (very nice) time sync program "AboutTime" is distributed under a "CareWare" license model.

Re:NTP here, too
Not quite sure what you mean but I've had great success using AboutTime, acts as both a client and a server. Windows product, novel license
:)

No Windows XP support?
This looked like a cool little project, shitty graphics nonwithstanding, but then I read (in the FAQ):
Q: Why is Windows XP not supported?
A: Because I decided it. I do not support any product, that forces anybody to register it. Please read the FreeCraft (GPL) license and visit www.boycottxp.com (down) and more boycott.
This is pure idiocy. Firstly, shutting out XP users from FreeCraft will not make people ditch XP, it will make them ditch FreeCraft (and any game which uses it). Thus, game developers who use FreeCraft will undoubtably want to remove the XP block, and if that's not possible for some reason, many will choose another engine. There are a LOT of XP users, and a lot of people who will be upgrading to XP from 95/98/Me/2000 soon. Shutting them all out is stupid, stupid, stupid, no matter what you personally think about Microsoft or Windows XP as an OS.
Second, while I have not personally seen the source of FreeCraft, I doubt that what's keeping the engine from working with XP is hard to fix (it works under Win2000!) - I wouldn't be suprised if there's just a bit that says "if( bWindowsXP ) Crash();" at the beginning. Isn't the FreeCraft team just lowering itself to Microsoft's level (remember how early versions of Windows purposefully wouldn't work on DR-DOS?) by doing this?
Anyway, let's hope that for some future release, the FreeCraft team stop with this silliness and more importantly, stop discriminating against the thousands of people who have chosen to use Windows XP - or, maybe more commonly, had it pre-installed on a new computer. -
Re:Greedy bastards!
When I say free software I usually mean free software .Remember that even 1/100 of cent per codec makes it impossible to implement as free software. If you write a free software encoder and ten milions of people will start using it, will you just pay $2.5M to MPEG-4 guys, begging people to stop using it in more copies?
If free like free beer, you're right.
If free like free speech, you're not.If the program is gratis (like free beer) but it's not a free software, it can be possible to control how many people are using it, so you can control how much money you have to pay to MPEG people. But if it's a free software, you can't control how many people are using it.
So I suppose, you wanted to say:
If free like free speech, you're right.
which is exaclty right. We already have proprietary Quicktime or Windows Media players to download for free. Apple and Microsoft can pay $2M/year for MPEG-4 but if they don't want to, they can always offer a fixed number of copies to download, forcing you ro gegister. But people making a free software movie player, can't force such restrictions.
If free like free beer, you're not. -
My thoughts on a few:
If I were doing much heavy programming in Java, I'd be using Netbeans . It's high-power and open-source. I'm not doing much heavy programming in Java though.
At the university I use Metrowerk's Codewarrior . It's very good, although both features and speed seem sub-par compared to Netbeans. It's closed-source, coincidently.
My personal favorite, though, is Arachnophilia . I don't need an IDE with gobs of features for the light programming I do; Arachnophilia is a multifaceted IDE that does Java, HTML, C++ and a few other common languages (albeit in small portions). It's fast enough for my work, too. -
Re:How dare they!Quoth the poster:
4) Skip all ads. ReplayTV took the approach of "screw the networks, we don't need 'em" and added a 30 second skip button. Since then, they've hired a former CBS exec and have realized that they will have to work with the networks in the future. [snip] Is it realistic for TiVo and ReplayTV to basically tell the networks "we don't care if no one sees the ads that make up your revenue stream"? NBC has invested in both companies BTW.
Why do they have to work with the networks? How dare they indeed! How dare they even think about giving their customers what they want!
But then the question was raised is it realistic for them to be indifferent to the networks' advertisers. I think it's a sad day when companies ignore what their customers want and lay down because it would piss off advertisers (indirectly, of course). I, for one, think that advertising is evil.
I'd love to see something like Adnix (from Carl Sagan's Contact) come out so I'd never have to see another commercial again! In the meantime, I guess I'll have to be content with muting the sound and making up my own dialog for 'em...

I said 'Preview', not 'Submit' dammit! -
My personal favorite
I use an HTML editor called Arachnophilia for all my web pages. It's simple to use, powerful, and highly customizable. And best of all, it doesn't cost money. Fundamentally, it's a text editor, but it has some really neat features. I think it's only for Win95/98/NT though.
