KDE Gets Gecko/Mozilla Support
Sivar writes "Ars Technica reports that not only has the Gecko engine been ported to Konqueror, but the developers were able to finish the port in only four days during the week-long Akademy conference. With this port, Konqueror users now have a choice between two mature, powerful rendering engines." -
GNOME for Grandma
An anonymous reader writes "PCWorld colmnist Matthew Newton has written an interesting two part article titled "In Search of Linux for Grandma", in which he shares his thoughts on introducing computers to a 75 year old PC neophyte (through Linux). He discusses the new spatial Nautilus that he is planning to unleash upon grandma, and quote from the article - "Grandma is never going to learn about "opening a file manager" to "navigate her way" to her documents. They are all going to live in plain view in folders on her desktop. And when she opens them, there won't be any surprises."." -
SmartDust Sensorwebs 'Real Soon Now'
DeAshcroft writes "EE Times has a piece on progress with the four-year-old DARPA-conceived Smart Dust self-organizing sensor networks. Based on Berkeley's TinyOS and TinyDB open-source projects, the article reports several companies are demonstrating both military and civilian applications. Ars Technica adds background and commentary on issues not discussed in the EET article." -
Kids, Computers And Authority
Spasemunki writes: "This link showed up on Ars Technica the other day. It's an article on Brill's Content on the sociological impact of a society where the younger generation has all the technical know-how, and parents are left to seek the advice of their kids on how to keep things running. It discusses patterns in computer use and knowledge, and the rising economic and social power of the young and computer saavy. Includes some words from Shawn Fanning of Napster fame." -
News on Pentium IV
MotaK writes "Ace's Hardware and ARS-Technica has reported on PC Worlds article on the Willamette Processor, dubbed the P4. This proc. will apparently be only a 200Mhz frontside bus, and launch sometime in 2000. " -
Interview w/ South Park Sysadmins
Darkfell wrote in to send us a great interview over at Ars with the South Park Sysadmins. Its pretty long, but its actually an excellent piece with lots of nuggets about the shows production, the hardware and software that gets used, and the video games they play. A quite excellent interview... highly recommended. -
PIII - dead end technology?
S. Casey writes "It looks like Intel is beating a dead horse, and then some, at least that's my impression from this review of Intel's "PIII" and its Slot-1 competitors. The best part? "The PIII at 560 has a 7.57% increase in 3DMarks over the 300A at 450MHz. Less than an 8% increase in speed despite a 24.4% increase in clock speed... from a processor that costs twelve and a half times as much as the 300a." The review compares 4 of Intel's "best" CPUs and pretty much demonstrates that the PIII is a waste of time. Bring on .18 micron. " -
Overclocking Pentium IIs
Dr. Damage writes "Ars Technica has just published an article entitled Clocking and locking the Pentium II. The article looks at exactly how PCs generate and control CPU clock speeds and how Intel locked the bus multiplier in the PII. It's also got some tech explanations and speculation about the possibilities for bus locking the PII/PIII architecture to prevent overclocking. " -
Hands-on Review of the SGI Visual Workstations
An anonymous reader sent us a good review of those SGI Visual Workstations that we all want to reformat and stick Linux on. The review is that its a solid, and even superior NT machine. Wonder what sort of Linux box it'll make. I volunteer to test it! (Along with I bet just about anyone else who reads this page) -
SGI's Visual PC
CSD writes "As I was surfing for news bits this morning I noticed that the guys over at Ars Technica have an in-depth review of the new SGI NT box. Apparantly they got hold of a 320 model. I figured this was OK content for this site as well, since people are clammoring to know about Linux support, and from some of the hardware mentioned in this review, it leaves room for doubt about Linux working on it w/o some major tweaks. " If SGI is smart, they've got an army of hackers making sure these 'tweaks' are ready as soon after this bugger is announced. Update: 01/05 11:50 by CT : afniv writes "In an interview with SGI CEO Rick Belluzzo regarding the launch of the new "NT workstation", he discusses the new direction of SGI and the fact that he "can't go on a customer visit without somebody asking about Linux."
