Re:Quick
Ahem. A monopoly is a company that has attained the majority of the market in a segment of the economy and uses its position as the market leader to supress potential competitors.
The RIAA is not a company, they don't sell products -- it's an independent organization created by the 5 major record labels and many independents to protect their shared interests. And last I checked, 5 companies is significantly more than the 1 company required for a "monopoly."
Furthermore, they're not exactly doing anything anti-competetive, at least nothing effective. The last dozen or so CDs I bought at my local record shop were all independent artists with no influence on the RIAA. The shop, incidentally, is owned by TransWorld and closely tied to Ticketmaster and ClearChannel -- but they have no problem selling me non RIAA-cds, and for less money ($10-15). Price fixing collusion is bad, but by definition collusion requires two companies...so it can't be monopolistic, and it's not anti-competetive because LOTS of artists sell their albums in stores and online for WAY less than the average CD cost reported by the RIAA.
The "problem" with RIAA cd prices isn't that they are anti-competition, but that the RIAA members know they have music you want, and they know they can charge a lot for it and still make money. So that's what they do. Kind of unfair, but not illegal, not anti-competetive, and not monopolistic.
Nice joke and all. But it's not accurate. -
Damn Straight!
I know people in their mid 20's who wouldn't care
Damn straight, i'm 16 and i couldnt care less if the big 5 went under. Fuck them, they've screwed their customers and thrown crapy music at us for too long. Its not just the RIAA, its their bedfellows like Clear Channel. I flat out refuse to listen to Clear Channels shit, which leaves me with one good radio station. Also just last week i won tickets from that last decent radio station to a see one of my favorite bands, but i never even picked them up, because the show was "Clear Channel Presents:..." (sorry to the all the guys in the get up kids, I felt bad so i ordered a hoodie from your website). But there are alternatives to the Big 5; Asian Man Records, Vagrant, Deep Elm, Drive Thru Records, all great indie labels (and look, they support real causes). Hell, Drive Thru has signed 2 great local bands i know (the Benjamins[RIP] and The Last Place Champs, i went to school w/ all the guys in LPC). Fight the RIAA and MTV and all the crappy pop-culture they try to shove down our throats! I swear, not a day goes by that i dont wanna crack some underclassman girl in the head whos dressed exactly like Avril Lavigne. I'm damn sick of it all. -
Re:The real
non-RIAA music and watch non-MPAA shiznit
Amen to that. Where does one find such treasures though? Off the top of my head I can name two record companies who are not RIAA members (Asian Man Records and Hopeless Records). I don't understand the movie industry nearly as well but I imagine I've never seen a non-MPAA movie (excluding home videos etc.).
Assuming one can find such gems it will still be a difficult road. Mainstream media is nearly impossible to avoid completely. What's a guy to do when all his friends go to the movies?

some record companies still are honestI know that Asian Man Records aren't part of the RIAA and I don't think they have any plans of ever joining. From their web site:
Asian Man Records is a small label out of Northern California. We do everything 100% D.I.Y.! It's an ethic we believe in. The label is run by Mike Park out of his parents garage. His friend Tony works on mail order, Julie does the web site, and Miya does zine/radio promotion. There are no future aspirations to become the next Epitaph or Fat. We appreciate the ton of support from you the buyers. It's an awesome thing to know that there are people who believe in what you're doing. We sell all our cd's for $8 or less, postage paid. We'll never raise the prices unless there's a drastic rise in cost. We hope to be around for a long time. Please mail order as much as possible. I hate hearing that someone paid $13.99 for an Asian Man release when I sell it for $8 postage paid. So remember, mail order is fun! Take care and have a nice DAY!
While Asian Man Records is a pretty small label, in the punk/ska scene, they're well known. It nice to know that there are still some record companies that care more about the music than making money or becoming a huge company.
- Everyone at Asian Man Records -
Re:Is there a third side to be on?Another way to support the artist is to shun the big record companies like BMG and others. Instead, support small independent record companies like the nice folks at Asian Man Records and other companies that push bands that get almost no radio play and are not sold by the fat money grubbing hogs of big music publishers.
Tell me what makes you so afraid
Of all those people you say you hate -
who let cd prices stay high?
I hear everyone complaining about how high CD prices are. Well, they wouldn't be so high if no one bought them. Sure, perhaps the average
/. poster doesn't buy into all the hype and it's the ignorant consumers who are buying all the cds, but if that's the case, this drop in CD prices probably won't affect you much. I for one only buy CDs of small name bands from small record labels (I love Asian Man Records and CDs cost between 3$ and 8$).
You want cheaper CDs? Stop paying 15$+ for them.
