Re:The nature of a virus.
You certainly won't find "pr0n" in the dictionary either, and yet...
(by the way, I was being sarcastic with the virii thing... heh) -
Those crazy japanese
Those crazy Japanese. First they build the Super-kamakamode[sic] that can detect a single photon, and now they have ablity to emit them one at a time to!
And that doesn't even get into their cool anime and hot women.
But seriously, this is going to require a bit of work before it's totally practical for mass usage, right now they would have to use a huge photomultiplier tube in order to actually sense a single photon. I think it'll be a while before CCD or CMOS light detection is that good...
Or hey, maybe we'll all go back to vacuum tube computers :P -
Great.

Ack, second URL correction
Sorry, the second URL should be http://autopr0n.com/uptime.txt -
Not true.
URL: http://autopr0n.com/random.txt.
Mime type: application/octet-stream
Actual type: text file
Action: shows up in IE as a regular text file.
Now, when you take a real .exe file, rename it to .txt, and then send it as application/octet-stream IE will prompt to download/open, and if you click open it will open it in notepad. For example
URL: http://autopr0n.com/random.txt.
Mime type: application/octet-stream
Actual type: win32 executable (shows you how long your computer has been running, actually) -

except, of course, that its entirely not true.
URL: http://autopr0n.com/cliplay.exe
Mime type: audio/x-wav
Action: Opens up media player and says "cannot play back, format not supported"
In other words, you're completely full of shit. And so is the person who posted this bogus artical in the first place. -
What the fuck? What has slashdot come to?
This article is complete crap. I tested it, myself, and it simply isn't true.
A quick edit of my mime.types file in apache, and .exe files are now sent as text/plain. When I type in the URL http://autopr0n.com/cliplay.exe. Internet Explorer does indeed handle it the same way it would handle executable content. It asks if i would like to download or execute it Hardly much of a fucking security issue if you ask me, especially considering the fact that it would behave in the exact same manner if the mime type was application/octet-stream or whatever the default value was.
In other words, the meme type has no effect on how IE handles executable content. But if this were a problem, it would mean that IE automatically ran all executable content it received, including stuff with the proper mime header. You would know this two if you stopped to think about it for half a second.
Oh, and mozilla does the exact same thing (well, it doesn't give you the option to execute from the cache like IE does). At least in the somewhat older version I have.
You guys couldn't take five fucking minutes to test this before posting this crap story?
Oh wait, it was from michael... nevermind. Anyone else remember the united devices fiasco a while back where michael attacked some anti-cancer distributed software because it was being funded by 'corporations' (Intel) who would of course patent everything and make money off everyone's spare cycles (despite the fact that it was clearly stated on the site that it wouldn't be). Couldn't be bothered to check sources or verify anything before posting a story to millions. And it's the same here. Way to fucking go Mr. 'journalist' -
those AVS systesm are a ripoff.
People get paid by getting people to sign up. Once they do, they're is no reason for them to have compelling content beyond the gateway. Once everyone gets one system, people will move on to another.
Very few people actualy get those things anyway, there's tons and tons of free porn on the net.
Check out the hun or autopr0n and you'll basicaly get all the porn you could ever want. -
Not true
I think that software could be written as well as engineering projects, however although I'm sure we would all really like super-stable software, it just doesn't matter that much. Unlike a bridge or a moonshot, if software fails all we have to do push the reset button.
The reason that bridges are made better then software is because you can't have it fail, people could die. The reason most software isn't made as well as most buildings is because it simply isn't worth it to the people paying for the software. Why expend ten times the cash to have a rock-solid system when dealing with shoddy one would only cost twice as much to deal with?
Nowadays, things like OSs are a lot stabler then they used to be, but as computers become more depended upon, the cost of downtime is going up. Us desktop users are just getting a virtuous windfall.
I'll give you an example. I wrote a support program for my porn site that would spider a specified TGP site and download all the galleries so that I could review them for inclusion on my own site. The program is written in java, but it leaks memory like a motherfucker. (I have no idea why, since the program is written in java, so it shouldn't even be possible). After a while, I'll get an out of memory error, but I can just start again and pick up where I left off. But it simply isn't worth it for me to go through and radically change the structure or rewrite the program in C++ (doing my own memory management) because it works well enough for what it needs to do.
No ones life depends on my ability to download gigs of porn, and so the quality of the software reflects that.
