If the issue is that NASA generates billions of dollars towards research into novel technologies, and supporting scientists, just about any sort of field will do: the study of breakfast cereal, exploration of the insides of trees, dirt moving, anal spelunking.
After years of NASA launching various types of protoplasm into high orbit, I think that the benefits of the practice are yet to be seen. If anything, humans, and other sorts of animals, being shot into space has been proven to be a monumental waste of time, money, and imagination.
Why not focus on sending people to the bottom of the ocean? If anything, this sort of pointless exploration might actually yield some sort of useful benefits to humans traveling in the sea - an act which takes place millions of times daily. Plus, and I think this is the most fundamental reason that sea exploration is better than space exploration:

Interesting article in last week's NY Times magazine: France has seen a large increase in gang rapes, many attribute this to the increasingly widespead avaialabilty of pornography.

Or as an extreme example, in many Europeans countries, pedophilic books or even pictures/videos are easily available. Which is just a sarcastic way of saying: don't be simplistic. Different countries have different cultures, sensibilities, and problems, and have to deal with them differently. The US has a huge problem with guns, despite other countries having similar gun laws and rates of ownership, or even more openly violent cultures. If there weren't such differences, there would be only one universal government/moral code/religion/whatever.

People are still having masturbating in America. Pornography isn't really that hard to find! People still have sex a lot more in movies and TV, than in real life! In Visual C++, to open a window takes about 104 lines of code if you estimate the number without doing any research like myself. In Visual Basic, you can open a window just by creating a new project and hitting 'Run'. It's easy, and that's why it works.

I remember getting into a debate with some kids about this in highschool. The next day, I'd produced a program that would bounce a ball around in a window in 30 lines of code.

By "squishing" the code down (although, with only one semicolon per line, outside of for loops) I was able to get it down to 23 lines. Keep in mind I was in highschool.

There are already a bunch of services claming to bhe the "napster of porn", supposedly trading passwords to porn sites. but in actually they're probably prearranged deals. Give out a 'psudopassword' and let people resubscribe for a higher rate.

This would probably end up being the same kind of thing. I know this is a bit hypocritical to say, but the online porn world is full of some of the sleaziest people out there. I mean, how much spam is for porn sites? These people will use any deceptive marketing tactics they can to make money, or as they would say '$$'. I remember reading some supposed how-to guide for starting up a porn site, and it explained how to scam search engines. The acted like there was nothing wrong with doing that at all. And of course, these are the people who invented the popup window.

The most discussing thing, though, is the way they'll put copy up on their sites that totally degrades women, you know, "This fucking bitch wants the cock so bad," etc. Its just, well as I said, discussing.

I suppose I could theorize that the people who end up going into porn are already willing to throw off morality for profit, (but don't want the legal exposure of, say, being a drug kingpin)

But anyway, if these guys succeed in buying napster, it'll be a sad day for napster. Not that napster was really that great, but these guys probably don't have any intention of even letting people trade files, but rather simply using the napster trademark some kind of supped-up pay site. (and yeah, the stuff won't be free.)

One of the things I'd like to do, if autopr0n ever became a big thing, is try to create a place where people can find pornography without all the ridiculous bullshit, Spam, etc. I think porno can be profitable without being incredibly demeaning to the customers and the women who appear in it.

you know, if you got to http://autopr0n.com:8080/ (for example) You'll make an http connection over port 8,080, and talk directly to the apache tomcat servlet/JSP engine rather then going through apache. (but don't do that, there is no mod_gzip on 8080 :P)

There is no reason I couldn't run a web server, or any other server on any other port. I could even run a p2p app on 80 if I wanted to. Blocking ports only makes things more frustrating for people because things don't work 'out of the box'. A little configuration will get it running in no time.

Also, a lot of protocols (such as HTTP, as in the example) include port numbers in URLs or other identification. So rather then getting a packet that says "there's another Freenet node on bla.somesite.com" it says something like "there's another Freenet node on bla.somesite.com port 80"

Freenet can even masquerade as other services, so connecting to them with a non-Freenet client will give you another service ("nothing to see here, move along") which means there is actually (well theoretically) no way to detect Freenet by bulk scanning. (well, actually there's away to get around that... and then another way to get around that workaround, but describing that would take me forever and would be entirely beside the point)

All sites tested here will be reviewed by party apparatchiks for inclusion in the filters.

I'll usually design using IE and then tweak it until it looks good in IE and Moz. (even when using 'cross platform' code, it still never works right in both, in my experience)

In those cases it's generally IE's problem -- there's a huge chunk of CSS2 that even IE6 ignores or botches, but that Gecko gets right.

As a Web developer, I've said the same thing on more than one occasion -- but then had to support NS4 anyway because a couple of the directors (i.e., boss's bosses) still use it.

Regarding NS4, the biggest problem for me is when I need to browse from UNIX boxes where I have only non-root access, and NS4 is often the only choice. What I'm leaning toward now is putting all the CSS in files exploiting the `media="all"' bug so NS4 ignores them. Then the NS4 users get a plain-vanilla grey-background text page which may be ugly as sin but still works. That's what's important.

Well, I belive the reason that 'sicko' sites spam whereas 'normal' sites do not is that the main-stream porn industry simply does not spam at all.
