Re:Intel will not allow MS a free hand...
how do you use Javascript to write a fast, efficient signal processing application?
How do you write 3D graphics in HTML5?
things like image processing
HTML5 and JavaScript is pretty damn fast these days, it even outpaces Flash in some areas.
There's even a x86 emulator written in JavaScript. Sure it's not as fast as native, but these apps are not particularly latency-sensitive (arguably an audio library is the most timing-sensitive). Sure, native is faster, but who really uses native code (assembly) outside the codec, compiler or embedded spaces anymore?. Everything else is just differing layers of abstraction.

Re:Cloud = For Suckers
I regularly use "cloud stuff" like Google Docs and the Aviary apps, as well as Dropbox. That means I can access and edit my documents everywhere I can find a barely decent computer with internet connection. As well as download them everytime I need.
So, no. Using the "cloud" has saved me a lot of hassle.

Re:wrong OS? NO! Wrong QUESTION!
well the folks here are trying and its pretty neat but still no full blown photoshop

Re:Flash vs HTML5 = Word vs TextEdit
But that doesn't mean that Flash is necessary for normal websites.
I never said that, but I did say this:
Flash is often misused, but it doesn't mean it doesn't have legitimate uses.
Some people seem to be too eager to see the death of flash, but once flash is gone, the misusers will just move to another tool. And it won't be necessarily better.
Flash benefits are not limited to games and animations, but also things like the Aviary web apps, Pixlr and others, which don't have HTML5 alternatives as good as them yet.

Re:That was a close call
There was an app for the iPhone that billed itself as a contact backup application. The company took that information and used it to spam the contacts of anybody that had used the application. They may not have lied about the information the app was accessing, but they were unscrupulous with what they did with it. I'd call that malware.

Re:Nothing to see here folks
No, see, they just redefine malware. Even if it looks like malware, walks like malware, and quacks like malware, if Apple allows it, it's clearly not malware.

Re:May be a good time to discuss alternatives
For Mac users, there are Pixelmator and Acorn. For web users in general, there is Aviary.

Re:I guess he ran out of interesting questions ...That's pretty short sighted to be honest. There are (believe it or not) many more applications for the Flash Player than playing video. A couple of examples, off the top of my head:
Audio synthesis: http://www.hobnox.com/index.1056.en.html
Image creation: http://aviary.com/
PDF creation: http://alivepdf.bytearray.org/
There are thousands more of course, these are just the ones that sparked my interest in the last couple of weeks.

Re:Doublespeak
Flash supports DRM out of the box, and Silverlight has several features that make it better than Flash. Even its open-source implementation [mono-project.com] is better.
I develop in Flash Builder with Eclipse using AS3, and I can testify that is a very powerful tool set. Try creating a Photoshop replacement like Aviary's Phoenix and related tools that runs in your browser of choice or a full featured audio editor RIA with your platform. You won't find anything today that can touch these applications in Silverlight. [Disclosure - I worked on Myna].
I followed your link to take a look at Silverlight 3. As far as DRM goes, the site you link to states "Silverlight DRM, Powered by PlayReady Content Protection enables protected in-browser experiences using AES encryption or Windows Media DRM." I must admit though that Silverlight 3 is starting to look like a very capable platform. I am not going to dispute that with you. Obviously, if it is not there yet it will soon be, because it can leverage the world of Net development. However, I would ask why anyone would want to support Silverlight, which represents Microsoft's ambition to extend its dominance on the desktop to the internet. Haven't we all had quite enough of this company? They are not good corporate citizens. Being more like a mafia than a corporation, Microsoft has maintained a strangle hold on the market for many years, impeding a healthy ecosystem from flourishing. It is because of the Monoculture that the internet has become a murky virus infested swamp where vast botnets flourish. Why would you want to promote this company? Recently, I have returned to Java for a new project. Java is very powerful and very fast for the thing like audio and image processing, and I would like to see it continue to evolve. Promoting open standards via HTML 5 and future versions that would allow us to create rich internet applications with non-proprietary tools should be our goal.

Re:open source replacements
So where's the drop-in replacement for Photoshop?
What I want to do is create a system for pro photographers to use computers and the net to sell photos...Have you seen this?
