strider2004 writes to tell us that Barrapunto, a Spanish tech news site, has outed two TV stations in Spain, one public and the other private, for engaging in Wikipedia vandalism for the sake of a story. (The link is in Spanish; Google translation here.) The public station introduced falsehoods into the Wikipedia entry for John Lennon; the private one vandalized the Elvis Presley entry. Both stations said they were performing an "experiment" to check the reaction time of Wikipedia. Both articles were promptly corrected by other editors.

Aloriel writes "This weekend the Spanish newspaper El Mundo is distributing a CD with the Linux distribution Guadalinex, the official distribution of Andalusia. There are other official distributions likeLinex, MAX, LLIUREX that in a few will replace nearly all Microsfot software and create new projects in order to use only Free Software in schools, hospitals and administration."

TKS writes "It's one of those cases you study that can send a whole network to failure but never really happens. However, this time it did. Today Vodafone's spanish nation wide network stopped working [google Translation / Original Verion] for more than 7 hours leaving eight million clients without service. Allegedly an error updating a node's software expanded to the whole network affecting mobile connections and internet access." The Fish comes in handy if you don't speak Spanish.

CandyMan writes: "The incredible story of the 15-year-old kid who built a nuclear reactor in his mother's toolshed, using common household objects, aluminium foil and duct tape. Sample quote: 'When David's Geiger counter began picking up radiation five doors from his mom's house, he decided that he had "too much radioactive stuff in one place", and began to dissasemble the reactor'." Well, I tried to check this out and see if it was for real, and I found a much longer version of the same article which appears legit, if still rather unbelievable. If any of you irradiate yourselves, you didn't read about it here, okay?

Following up: The New York Times has a follow-up story on the Munich Ratings Summit. "Not censorship", says the author of the plan, surprising no one. Tigr writes "Many people complained that the Bertelsmann Foundation Memorandum was available only in PDF format. I took the time to convert it into ASCII. The result is available. Read it while it is not yet declared unlawful. " Javier Candeira undertook a translation of our recent Munich article into Spanish and it has been posted on the Barrapunto.com site, which also uses the slash engine. Someone who speaks better Spanish than I do will have to tell me if it's a good translation or not.
